Default I Know, I Know....

I seem to be a pain lately, but please, bear with me, it's almost bass season up here in the North! So, here's my problem...

My Wild River, (aka -- St. Croix Wild River, ML, 7'6''), is possibly going to be my Drop-Shot rod this year. I'm still skeptical as to wheter or not it's too light, but here is my real problem....

Braid -vs- Fluorocarbon.

Braid Pros --
  • Braid will avoid a break-off during "cover-fishing" with this light-line technique.
  • Braid is cheaper (Well, maybe...), then fluorocarbon.
  • Gives good bottom feel.
  • Can be used time and time again.
  • Can use a fluorocarbon leader to avoid wasting line. (Mainline to swivel, swivel to leader, leader to hook, leader to weight. Make sense?)
Fluorocarbon Pros --
  • Near-, (Or so-claimed.), Invisibility.
  • Good bottom-feel.
  • Smaller diameter-to-test ratio.
  • Many companies to chose from.
Braid Cons --
  • Expensive!
  • Have to use a leader if I wish to switch techniques.
  • Very visible.
Fluorocarbon Cons --
  • Expensive(er)!
  • I've heard it snaps easily?
  • Wears easily.
Well, there's what I have. Do you have anything to add? Some constructive criticism? Cranebird?

Really? What pound test? I'll mainly be fishing deep weeds/cabbage, sunken brush, and rocky drop-offs.

Lunk-I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Would you clarify?

MI Basser -- I mainly fish Bird Lake, Hudson Lake, Iron Lake, and sometimes Kent Lake with Bender. Give me a shout if you ever want to go.

Rebbasser -- I am wanting to know what line I should use on my "Drop-Shot" rod. I posted the advantages/disadvantages to give yiou an idea as to what each line had.

I use 8 lb P-Line Floroclear. You are fishing it on a tight line with an open hook (mostly) so it will be sensitive. With an open hook all you need is a snap of the wrist for a hookset so braid is overkill IMO.

A Shakey head is a diferent story-there I use braid with a fluoro leader.

Thanks!

Don't you think 8lb. could be a little too light though? Some of the stuff I fish could be trouble with only 8lb.

Lunk, my dropshot rod is a ML Falcon Low Rider Dropshot rod-a spinning rod. One of the few spinning rods I use. I also have a multipurpose and a Falcon Cara spinning rod I use for Shakey Head.

If you are going to use a baitcaster for drop shotting-and I have and occasionally do-I use 12 lb Floroclear.

This is my St. Croix, ML, 7'6''. It shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks,

Thumbs up

Sounds like an ideal dropshot rod. What kind of reel are you putting on it? I use Shimano Symeteres and they are a sweet reel that won't break the bank.

"Break the Bank" and me love eachother...

I had an older Shimano Sedona 4000FB, (Way too big!), so I traded it to Adam Gambill and got a Daiwa Tierra 1500. Nice reel!

I'd also go with P-Line fluoroclear. I'm going to be using it in 6lb test for all my finesse fishing this summer. Also i'll be using 10lb test for soft jerkbaits.
