Default Itchin' To Fish! But how?

Hey all! I live on the Utah/Idaho border. The ice is just coming off the waters here, and I REALLY need to go wet my line. We have a shallow reservoir here where the river pools in the middle of the valley where I live.

There are smallmouths, largemouths, and assorted panfish.

What's my best bet for catching when they're just 'coming out of hibernation' so to speak?

What Bama said, plus I like using chatterbaits, hollow bodied swimbaits, and jerk baits like a LC Pointer 100 and Smithwick Rattln Rouge. Chatterbaits have worked great for me right after ice oout. I think it's because they can be worked supper slow and still offer enticing action. Right after ice out, I'll cast out a Chatterbait, let it sink to the bottom and slow roll it back to the boat.

Oddly enough, I just bought my first chatterbait a couple days ago... and my first shakyhead rigs.

suspending Jerkbaits deep drop off points half way up the creeks close or swing away from channel. Take some cookies or a sandwich or two to give you something to do while waiting, lol and crank it down and Slow pull, Slow pull..then let it sit 30seconds-2minutes i know it sounds crazy but it works.

In reading the Big Bass Zone book here recently I only used to fish jigs or really small finese worms but I am out to try some of his tactics as soon as the ice gets off the waters here in ohio. Great book though I recommend the book if you don't already have it.

I took my boys out with me on Saturday to a reservoir nearby that is really just the river meandering through the base of the valley (so there's a current). I tried nightcrawler under a bobber, jerkbaits, chatterbait, 1.5" grubs, 7" worms, rapalas, surface lures... with nary a strike. Varied my presentations, worked multiple locations...

At what temperature should the water be before I can hope for some activity?

Good call spinners work great this time of year.
