Default Skipping a baitcaster?

I was watching an episode of bassmasters the other day and saw something i didnt think you could do.
Dean Rojas was fishing a frog on a baitcaster, but when he was casting he would skip it under the willow trees and other trees.
Does anyone know how he does it without getting a backlash?

Yep, I can help you, spool your line up with heavy 25# mono for starters. If you use a lighter, or braided line, spool up half a spool to use when skipping with baitcasters.Your from the north, this winter, take it out on the ice and pratice skipping the bait across the ice , until you get a feel for the amount of energy you put the rod under motion, its almost like a check swing if you were playing baseball.Training your thumb can be very helpful to extending your distances and stopping the bait in a desinated target area.I hope this helps.P N J

I can do it about 3/4 of the time, I just throw the bait at an angle to the water, and hope my thumb is smart enough to know how much spool brake to apply!

i've tried it a couple times, i can tell it'll take alot of practice before i can do it everytime. That has to be invaluable once you can skip a frog under heavy cover.

Just do a low to the water side armed cast and feather that spool with light touches of your thumb, off and on as it skips....deadly under docks

Nah, that's been over for years. I took a line drive off the ring finger of my right hand a few years back which broke it and the Dr. told me I'd never play the violin again. Now, I never played it before I broke my finger, but that is beside the point.....

I Picked It Up Pretty Quickly. Started Out With A Heavy Frog. Its A Whole Different Kind Of Cast. Pnj Hit It On The Head The Best I Think It Is A Lot Like A Check Swing.

I can do it with spinning gear pretty easily and am succesful 3/4 of the time, but with a baircaster, I can barely get my lure in the water w/o a backlash, but I just started w/ one a month ago.

Topwater or PNJ - Can you suggest the type of rod that one might use to skip baits? Which type of handle, length and action works for you. I've seen pro's skip with one hand and also with two hands. Which works for you?
