the tricks with a cranking trees are #1 a square bill #2 keep it moving -never stop it-#3 feel the line movement. if you feel the line come across some thing and it feels like the bait is coming toward the surface your bait is under a limb. as you keep winding the bait will come up and the lip buy design will bounce over the limb and dig down once more..

if you do what some old school anglers talk about "pausin the bait after contact" this is the BIGGEST MISTAKE you can make when fishing trees. water forces the trebles up against the bottom of the bait and straight out during the retrive. stop it and they insantly fall with gravity. when they do they are 150% more likly to hang up...

can ya tell i fish alot of trees with a crank..

i liked my david fritts crankbait reel so much that i bought a second one a few weeks later. once you get the brakes dialed in they will cast a country mile. the lower geared reels let you crank deep diving crankbaits all day long with little to no fatigue on the arms and hands.

I never reel a crankbait through limbs.I fish it through by using the rod to walk the lure through the limbs. The pause depends on whether your paused while putting slack in the line or not and what crankbait you have tied on.Poes 400's back up as the old tapp and some bagleys did. They will actually turn 180 degrees and rise on slack line, but you knew that already.
