Default Lure stats

I reviewed my journal entries for this past year and "ran the numbers" regarding percentage of fish caught on types of lures. Here are the results:

Crankbaits 30% There was a tie between the DT-6 parrot and DT-6 shad for #1 crankbait award.

Stickbaits 25% The best producing stickbait was a 5" Senko in smoke with black and purple flk. The #2 color was firetiger.

Live bait 16% Yes, I still use live bait sometimes but only when I am with my 4 year old son.

Tubes 10% Without a doubt, this soft plastic fell down the chart this year. There was a time when I really kicked some but with this lure. Not this year.

Swimbaits 9% I wasn't throwing the big "California baits" but have some luck on some smaller sized swimmers.

Spinnerbaits 5% Not too many on this lure but the ones that I caught were all good sized fish.

Hard Jerkbaits 5% A bright pink Husky Jerk accounted for all fish in this category.

As a side note, I didn't catch a single fish on topwaters. I love top water action but was quite successful with other presentations during the early morning and evening hours. I generally don't use topwaters during the day.

i have not run my numbers yet.. but i do know that lucky craft and bandit were on top of the crank list. the hula grub and paca craw were neck and neck and well above all other plastic baits..the blade produced ok but not as well as other years..the frog bite was very short windowed this summer but the buzzbait was off the hook...

Do these numbers really mean anything ? Only if you throw everything you own. I know a guy that catches 90% of his bass with a black spinnerbait..thats because thats all he throws , unless he catches nothing on it for over 2 hours , then he will try something else.

A spinnerbait was my most productive lure last year by far, probably 70%
T/rig brushhog 10%
blk/blu jig 10%
topwater 5%
crankbait 5%

i didn't keep the numbers but if i had to guess it would be

1. crankbaits (i was on a killer crankbait bite all summer long)
2. jigs (jigs really shined on the days i couldn't get the wind for the crankbait bite)
3. creature baits (did a lot of flipping and pitching this year)
4. buzzbait (the buzzbait bite was strong all spring, summer, and fall)

I was going to make the same point as CMorg. How do those catch percentages compare to percentages of the time that the lures were used?

Most of my fish came on topwaters, but that's largely because I fish them a disproportionate amount of the time.

I always have a bunch of rods rigged up with different lures until I find what the fish are hitting on and develop some type of pattern. Nevertheless, there is no point, I just enjoy running the numbers at the end of the season.

70% soft plastics including tubes and jigs
20% spinnerbaits
10% crank baits lipless and lipped

less than 1% caught on top water but these numbers were only from tourney fishing. i never kept track if i was just out fun fishing

I don't keep an actual record. Off the top of my head;
#1- Ratl trap
#2 spinner bait- white w/ different variations
#3 soft plastic- frog or 10" Charlie worm in Grape

I would have to say that most of my bites came off of a jig this year, that just because its my favorite bait.

the crankbait bite was on here too, bandit and cotton cordell in smoking joe color. Probably cranking took two thirds of my fish caught this year, where as last year it was the swimbait and paca craw, manns minus one.

My top producers this year were crankbaits (Strike King Series 1), a Red Eye Shad, and a Shaky head or texas rigged Strike King 3X Finesse Worm.

RC, Bandit, and Speed shad for crankbait
Craws, creatures, and 9" worm in various green colors
Did Okay
Floating worm and senko caught some
Chatterbait early in the year and spinnerbait late
Grass jig had it's time
Did poorly or not used
Swim bait - 3 of 10 hook up rate
Never threw a drop shot or C-rig
Frog bait (not toad) - didn't buy it until late in the year

Numbers are just that, numbers. They really only reflect what your go to lures are, and therefore are the lures you use most often. So you're going to catch more fish on them then other types of lures over the long haul. The only way that a percentage means anything is under a controlled set of conditions over a full season with a decent number of anglers participating in the experiment.
