Well everybody should know that the very most important first step in grill cleanin is having a favorite cool beverage close at hand cause that grill can git real hot and thirst is a dangerous thing.

For grasing the grates, if you have grates you can remove (with a tool, or not while hot though) an olive oil sprayer works great. I use one like this:
You pump the lid and it pressurizes the oil and it sprays like a can of PAM or something, but you use whatever oil you want. BB

Just for the record, chef Bobby Flay suggests not using olive oil on the grill as burnt olive oil tastes funky - he suggests using canola oil instead.

Great post Zooker, and I couldn't agree more. I too pre oil my grates before cooking. Here is a little tip to try. Instead of using paper towells for oiling your grates try this. Put your oil in a small bowl. Now take a small onion and slice it in half. Now take one of those two pronged long handled grilling forks and shove the fork into the side of the half onion. Then you can dip the onion into the oil and use the long handled fork to apply the oil to the grates without getting too close to the heat. Works like a charm.
