Shark Week -
Well the Discovery channel has started it's 25th Shark Week, and they always seem to start off with the Great White. If you think a smallie crushing a top water popper is exciting - those big sharks breeching on that towed "seal" imitation, blow that experience way into the ho-hum.

When we were making our way back from Mississippi to CA, we had to go through the straights of Magellan. I was out on the flight deck of the ship trying to capture some pictures of the icebergs, the cross that sits on the most Southern tip of South America, etc.
All of the sudden this crowd of Sailors and Marines forms not to far from me. As I look over the side this seal comes flying up out of the water and then I see them...two killer whales annihilating this seal. Talk about seeing how the food chain works, this poor seal didn't stand a chance. It was gruesome, but one of those things I'll never forget. |

I never tire of watching those high flying great whites! It's amazing a creature so large can come up out of the water like that. And then I remember the youtube video, "It's a shark! It's a shark! It's a big *** shark!!!".

I'd love to witness a Great White breeching, what a rush. My wife's cousin is a Marine Biologist and a couple years ago during the break between Jr & Sr year she went to South Africa and interned with the blond Marine Biologist (Allison) that was on Monday night. She was very lucky to get one of the three slots offered and actually saw those big sharks busting those seal decoys. It was actually winter down there and they were in full swing. She said it was the most amazing thing she's witnessed.

If you ever get a chance to get to Chatham on Cape Cod you can walk the beach and see the seals that the sharks feed on. They aren't little animals either so those sharks have to be massive. Imagine hooking into one of them.....
