time to find a new hole
With the death of a farmer that lives down the road here, his wife informed me last night that she will be selling the farm soon, I have been fishing and stocking it since 1980.
Its seen better days, built in 1968 at one time I have raised the overflow drain up a foot or two, had the water level way up and had it stocked with crappie and huge bass. When I first started working with the farmer and checked out his pond, it was full of bullhead cats and bluegills, and very few bass. I started getting several angers to take their catch and stock the pond, along with some huge bluecats. I figured it would come to a end, they both were pushing 80. the other pond I hit, the old lady there has cancer, so that will come to a end too. Most of the time when someone buys a farm they wont let any of the old fishermen that hit it daily to come, fearing vandalism or theft or garbage on the banks. We live close to half dozen great lakes that are any where from 600 acres to 17 miles long, it was just nice and convienant to have this pond 5 minutes from my house, it was my "barometer" to what the fish were doing, in preparation of the next big lake outing. |

MAn sorry to hear it. I too am looking for a new hole. There is a pond 10 minutes from my house, but I dont what the people will say when I ask them if I can fish there, There have been rumors of them not letting anyone fish there. I think I am going to ask though, because the worst they can say is NO.

You can always tell them you catch and release only,
and that you'll never trash the place and will pick up litter. I can understand any land owner for saying no, When you own a pond you run the risk of people drowning in it, littering in it, And worst of all is when the people that are allowed to fish it bring a guest, and down the road the guest starts comming on his own with company. LIke I said, I have all the lakes to fish, this pond was home and the most convienant. I'll figure something out, we used to hit the gravel pits here before they had some drownings, and closed it off to the public. |

always sucks to lose a hole. Don't give up without trying though. Be sure to ask the people if they'd mind. I'd suggest going over there or calling the new owners, introduce yourself, and tell the owners the history lesson behind the pond and how you've been the one managing it for the previous farmer since the ponds inception. With the right owners and right approach, you may just get your hole back.
