green bait fish up close and personal?
Repoman's question about flats got me to thinking about this. Hope ya'll can help this ign'ernt Italian: A couple/three weeks ago I was bank fishing a reservoir that is too low for boats. I was walking along a light yellow clay bank and saw a school of dark green baitfish horsing around right close to the bank. I thought, at first, that they were shad being chased but when I started to cast out I saw that they weren't shad. Or perch (bluegill). They seemed to be about 2"-3" long and dark green. The water was about 40 or so that day. I tried to sneak my fat carcass up closer to get a real close look but they buggered off.
Is this a common baitfish I've just never seen? Thanks- P2 |

That describes about 70 % of the baitfish here, since we do not have shad in the lakes here. They could be
1, Emerald shiners 2 alewife (sawbellies) 3. Smelt 4 fathead minnow Are you aware of any of these in your waters ?

Yah, Cranebird, we do- alewifes and fatheads. I looked up fatheads again and got a better picture. That looks pretty close to what I saw. Good call. Thanks for the help!

I was watching them fishin' in El Salto last night, and saw green splotches, about 10' in diameter under the water surface, and they said they were Tilapia. Do you have these in your lakes? Probably not, but just a guess...

Hey, Lunk! No, we don't have any Tilapia...yet. I was out bank stompin' today and saw the same fish on the same bank. They look like the Fatheads Cranebird mentioned. Seems weird that I'd never noticed them before, being that I was raised in these parts. Just goes to show what a great big onion bassin' is- one layer after another!
Thanks for the interest!! P2 |

For those who don't know what a fathead minnow looks like......(as if you really care about the fathead minnow!)
My questions would be what is the best bait to immitate this baitfish and can you get it done in a color that matches it? |

Smitty, I'm going back to that reservoir tomorrow with some green colored fluke-looking bait. I'm going to try the Donkey rig C-Rig mentioned in another post. I'll let you know what, if anything, develops.

Think about watermelon flukes, pulse worms, etc.
And what about crankbaits? Think of the type and colors that may match. |

Thanks, BF! I throw a lot of C-rigs myself and that Arkansas shiner does right well considering who's on the other end...

HA! Didn't think of it like that. Very cool, in a sad, sad way... None the less, Pig did try the Donkey rig and was promptly thwarted by 30 mph winds. This has been the windiest spring in the entire history of the universe. Ever. Bar none. The Mississippi has to be maybe 5 miles wider since at least that much of Virginia has been blown into the Atlantic.
