Trolling Motor Prop
As I had previously posted in the bragging section, I am currently without a TM prop. I plan to remedy that this week, but am trying to figure out if there is any value to the 3 bladed props. My very simple understanding of physics tells me that this should mean that I have a larger surface that is touching the water. I would expect that this means that I have more grip and a stronger/faster pull.
That being said, my motor is a very old minn-kota 28. Will this added surface area cause issues with the motor. (over work it?) I really didn't have an issue with the 2 prop blade, but since I am replacing it I am considering all options. My wife didn't see this as a reason to buy a new TM, so replacement prop is my only option. Thanks

Cass, my understanding is that a 3 blade prop is better for cutting weeds (and slower) as a 2 blade is better for speed not so good in the weeds.
Sorry Cass - I got them screwed up. I knew it was one or the other.... My bad! I do have the 3-blade on mine Last edited by MIbasser; 07-29-10 at 07:52 PM. |

Hi Cass... A 2-blade prop is generally slower than a 3-blade prop. A 2-blade cuts through weeds better. A 3-blade is more responsive and has better top-speed.
I switch between the Motorguide Weedless Safari 2-blade and the Motorguide Machete III 3-blade all the time. The 2-blade is for when I'm fishing thick grass. I use the 3-blade when I need speed in open water. A 3-blade is also more quite.

Thanks guys. Do you notice any difference in the performance of your motor? My concenr is that the 3 blade would cause my current TM to overheat.
