New Spinning Rod

I picked up a 7' medium fast St. Croix premier spinning rod to pair with my Abu STX40. I was planning on using this combo mostly for weightless soft plastics but will also use it for small cranks and spinnerbaits that I can't throw with my baitcaster. What would you use this combo for?

I have the a rod with the same specs in the Mojo series. I find it makes a great wacky rig/shaky head/weightless plastic rod. I will probably work good for the small spinnerbaits as well.

I use a 7' M/F spinning as my dropshot rod. But would do well for what you stated for intended use.

hhmm, 40 size reel for a weightless plastics, try a 30! Evan it you are gonna use it for spinnerbaits and cranks (small ones). But yeah, I think it'll work!

Ya, the 30 size would be better. I bought the STX40 online after reading an article on bassmasters.com in which Skeet Reese recommended the reel for finesse fishing. I wish I would have got the 30 or even 20 instead but it's really not too bad on a 7' rod.

I can confirm this, as I own both an STX40, and an STX10. The STX40 is a really nice reel, but at 11 ounces, it could also be used as a boat anchor in a pinch.

None of the STX reels are lightweights, but for a finesse rig, even a 7 footer, I would go no larger than an STX20.

It is really the "service dog" of my spinning reels. I use it for crankbaits if I know it's going to be that kind of day. Or if I want to try out a different lure, but don't want to untie one of my casting rigs. I have it on my 7'0" Vendetta. I even use it for those times when I float live or cut bait for stripers on the river, since I know it has the guts to take on big fish (it handled a monster catfish just fine). I have 8lb Sufix Siege on it, but might try some 10lb Vicious Fluoro if I get brave enough to handle the twist.

For drop shot and/or weightless presentations, I use my STX10 on a 6'9" MLF Vendetta - 6lb fluoro, or my Daiwa 2500XTC on a 7'0" MF Mojo Bass - 8lb mono.

I could probably do with just two spinning rods, but it does save me 10-15 minutes of retying per trip, and when you catch as few fish as I do, you need all the wet-line time you can get.
