I need a fishing companion, 25 pounds or less.

Folks, I need a fishing buddy who does well in a boat on the water. Only deal is they have to weigh 25 lbs. or less.

I have a 50 lb. Pit & a 90 lb. Lab. They just won't be the hot set up I was thinking of in a 16 ft. canoe. My Lab use to go with me on my old 80 Horse Fiber Form but that money pit of a boat had to go. The 80hp Merc was awesome. Traded it for a nice 18' camper.

I had to dawg sit my grand dawg over the holidays while my daughter spent Christmas in Manhattan. It was a Shih Tzu. I never was fond of smaller dogs but this creature and I took to each other like fish to water.

This little DUDE was smart & cool !

Now I miss the little feller's companionship, thought this might be a great addition to fishing alone and making those long distance trips to the race tracks and lakes on the weekends.

What do you think and what would you recommend ?

Need some one to talk to on the water who won't call me a liar.

Any advice would be appreciated,

I had a Jack Russell for years that loved to go fishing with me, very smart and well behaved. If you can't find a dog you like, consider getting a small breed of monkey you can train to do simple boat chores like run the TM and unhook fish and take pictures and such.

I got a monkey, but he smokes & drinks too much and his Top Hat keeps getting in the way.

How big do the Jack Russel's get ? Will they warn you of snakes and such ?

jacks are a great little dog for fishing. although i ain't into small dogs. they are smart, and very protective. and they like to swim some too i hear.

as for the monkey.........got a bait monkey already, don't need another one in the boat. lol.

JRT's rarely reach the weight parameters you set in OP. They are very eager to make you happy, if that means alerting you to snakes, approaching storms, nayr-do-wells etc so be it. They do however have an independent streak that makes them pleasing/challenging companions.
I don't mind a drunk smoking monkey but that Top Hat has got to go.

I had a golden retriever great dog. Loved the water and was always relaxed... i never got the chance to take him fishing :/ now my home feels boring so we are getting an Irish Wolfhound google them if you don't know what they look like HUGE dogs. I would go the jack great dog but just not for me

Cocker Spaniels are nice, but some like the water so much you might have trouble keeping them in the boat.

That's him joedog, 'cept my grand dog's name is "Skipper" His registered name is Brady.

I just call him "Skipper". But he comes running with his favorite Uncle Josh Pork Rind every time. He loves the Craw fish !

His mama don't know this, she just gives him a 1/4" x 1/4" marsh mellow. Then he comes running to me, she keeps asking me why he does that but I just look away. I think he is ready for real frogs anyway.

Please keep that to us, the vet has already read me the do's and do not's. Sure is a lot of do not's though. huh. He hasn't got sick or died and stays within 24" of me 24/7. Always grinning too ?

Always wanted a dog that I could carry in one arm, but a dog with character not some puff ball, or "25 yarders"(The distance you can kick 'em), like a Jack, or some terrier, but every terrier I have ever known has had the disposition of a crack head. My neice got a Shibu inu, and it turns out to be a great dog, not the easiest to train, but great temperment, doesn't bark(kinda talks), fierce, and fits the "one arm" requirement.

Although I will always remain a "Lab man", without a doubt, the best breed of dog there is.

Yeah, I'm a lab man myself and I have been blessed to have the ones I have had. Pepper, the black, he's 12 years old and enjoying the good life of doing what he wants to do.

That's a sharp looking fellow you posted, looks like he cold handle a Gar with no problem.

Friend of mine had a Jack Russell. That thing was a hoot. She was all over the boat and as soon as someone set the hook she was right there to see if she if you'd get the fish close enough for her to get ahold of. She had a serious killer instinct in her. We had a 5 gallon bucket full of water with our minnows in it one trip. She would snap at the minnows anytime one would get close to the top. Finally she got so worked up because she couldn't catch them that she just dove into the bucket head first. Problem was her little legs were so short she couldn't get back out! I was laughing so hard I barely had the strength to lift her out of the bucket and set her back in the bottom of the boat. As soon as she hit the ground she was back at the bucket staring those minnows down again.
You might look at a Sheltie also. We have 3 of them, all under 25 pounds. They are very smart dogs and all of ours love the water and love being at the lake.
