June 29th Double Report
Bright blue skies and wind pushing our tin boat around made for a tough start. It was not until the shadows got long that the fish started to bite. Had some great hits and many missed fish. At dark minus 10 minutes a small stupid LGmouth decided to eat one of our baits. Skunk off and still more short strikes and missed fish ended the evening.
Capt Mike Fished hard for many blow ups on our toads and just like Capt Mike's once the shadows got long the bite was better. Capt Dave

You guys are too hung up on those toads. If you're getting that many blow ups without hooking anything, go to a soft plastic stick bait or jerk bait and slow it down just a bit. I know, you're guides and you know what you're doing, however.
Here in Florida, at certain times, the bass will bust frogs off the water, but rarely take one. They are keyed in on the parts of the frog that hangs below the surface, and since fake frogs ride a little higher than real ones, they miss. Go to a sinking soft plastic, fished weightless. Skip it across the surface, but pause in every hole just enough to get it under ... and hang on !!! You can let the toad sink a little more, but I've found that actually changing to the stick bait results in better hookset to hit ratios. |

We do use the dying frog routine to fish the foot of water a bit deeper. The stick baits get caught in the V of the spaderdock pads and rip off. I recently got some plastic bullet heads and use a swimbait with the plastic bullet head screwed into the body. It works well with a paddle tail fluke also. Both go thru the pads smoothly and stay on the hook.
We use a lot of stick baits but mainly for outer creek edges. Most customers hire us for the topwater bite and some die by the topwater bite. Capt Mike

I find that the super fluke will fit on a frog scew lock hook and work in them or yellow lotus also use lately a swimbait hook with same screw lock keeper on rubber swimbaits and yes at times the dying frog works well.Or an unweighted senko tossed in and occasionally jerked much slower but t times effective.
It is difficult to tell someone what works where they are at on their water,as may or may not elsewhere. Here on ky lake a pattern or color may not work where one is at yet 30 miles away works like a charm, due to differences of water in that distance, and or cover. It is or would be difficult to take a trip spend hundreds for a frog bite and end up tossing something else just to save the trip, like you said live by,die by. |

I get it. Since I've been hung up on Fly Fishing, I am having trouble reverting back to conventional gear for some bass fishing. Even though I KNOW I could get some big bass right now, I am just having too much fun with the little sunfish I am catching.
I understand the people that get a rush from the top water action, whether they're catching or not. I caught and released more than 60 sunfish yesterday. Nothing huge, but a blast all the same. Hard to give that up for a few big bass in the same time frame. http://youtu.be/Ju0vxMP0GjA |
