Yes, pause your retrieve when you feel it hit something. Most cranks have a natural buoyancy that, when you pause the retrieve, the float. Some even swim backwards for a bit when you stop, such as a fleeing crawfish.
A square bill crank, and/or cranks with a slightly smaller front hook help with this as well, the square bill is designed to deflect off objects, and the smaller treble isn't sticking out so far to get caught. Try to find the short shank trebles, same size hook, shorter shank, close to the same weight (which affects balance and action of the bait). |

big o's are alright by far not my favorite cranks...
i like norman lil n or badit 100's both square billed shallow cranks. you do not HAVE to hit some thing.. over gunning a crank bait has caught plenty of fish for me.. you do not need a square billed crank to do it.. just a crank that will dive deeper than the water you are fishing.. let the bait dig a ditch in the bottom.. actually the bait will bounce sorta off bottom. this looks alot like a bait fish busy feeding. and to a bass it looks like an easy target.. zooker

iron,
another trick in a related subject is to take a spinnerbait and when you hita limb, speed up the retrieve for several turns, this often will get you a strike. The problem with not being able to see the limbs in the water, while using a crankbait, you're always wondering what did I hit and will I get hung up.. sometime try a smaller bomber A crankbait, and crank down, if you feel it hit something, just quit reeling, those bombers backup and rise pretty fast. It may feel heavy like a fish on when you start cranking again, plus you probably won't get hung in that exact same spot.. both techniques are easy to practise when you are running the bait, try both methods . |
