Weird trailer light problem
Help!
With truck headlights off, when I press brake pedal in truck, trailer brake lights come on OK. If truck headlights are on and I press brake pedal in truck, the trailer brake lights go OUT. Weird. I'm not sure where to start. I looked at the trailer light bulbs to see if anything was burned out, but all looked OK. The ground wires for both trailer lights and the main ground wire on the trailer all looked OK to the eye (nothing disconnected or wires frayed) Please help!! Thanks, Amarillo |

It sounds like a wire crossed on the trailer.

I had almost the same problem and found it was the truck ground...fixed that and everything worked fine.

Update: wires not crossed, never changed from original wiring. Truck ground good. Main ground on boat trailer checked good. The grounds on the trailer lights were another story. Both trailer light grounds were badly rusted. I went to clean off the rust and just ended up punching holes where the lights were mounted to the trailer. Not good. I took a good look at the trailer, realized it was very badly rusted in a lot of places and decided to get a custom galvanized trailer because the boat is frequently launched in rivers with a lot of brackish water.

Wow, new trailer because lights weren't working!?!
Haha, just kidding. You were probably lucky to find out how bad the trailer was before something serious happened. If you don't mind me asking, how much was a new trailer? Mine is only 3 1/2 years old but rusting quite a bit. |
