Oops, now what?
I had took the boat out this weekend for a few hours after filling it up. I probably went through 2 gallons of gas total. When I got home, I noticed the still full oil in the back of the truck. Not sure how I forgot to add it to the tank!
So the question is, is there anything I should do or look for since my dumb @$$ ran it without oil for the day. It was on a no wake lake so I didn't run it fast nor long. It is an 1985 90hp merc.

So... no oil AT ALL? Or did you just not fill the tank up?

No oil in the mix. The 6 Gallon tank had about 1 gallon of 50:1 in it before I filled up.

Oh crap, you premix...hmm..well it didnt do it any good thats for sure. but if all you did was idle, you MIGHT have got lucky. the pistons/cylinders probably took the most damage. i would drain ALL gas out of it and drain the carbs and mix up a fresh batch and a run it on the hose for a few minutes. then do a compression test. if all shows good, run it and hope for the best

Most likly lil damage as without oil they blow up,mix it up run it with some staybil in it then do a compression test if you have a tester,if not just take it back out and try it.
Is it possible you put oil in it and also placed some in the truck? As that thin even idling think you would gain a hole out the side. |

If it were me (and I am no mechanic), I would probably take it to the mechanic before I started it again (it might be emberassing to tell him you forgot to add oil so I would just tell him my wife did it while I was at work lol). The reason I say to take it to a mechanic now is because it hasn't blown up yet. It may not blow up but if it decides to shove a rod through the side of the block it may end up tearing up stuff that you can keep from damaging if you catch the problem now. Just a thought though.

If its damaged already very lil a mechanic can do other than rebuild it,and sounds more like a memory problem, not for adding but for putting more oil in the truck.
Kinda doubt it was run that thin and survived. I to manually mix,put my oil in the splashwell, then after adding back in the truck,if any left as its hard sometimes to remember when or if,that keeps me straight on if. I generally buy my oil other than where I get my gas at,to get the brand I want. |

I went ahead and put it in the shop for a check up. The mechanic found no signs of damage and the compression test was fine. It looks like I dodged a bullet.

there is really nothing he could have seriously checked other than that without taking half the motor apart. but if youre gonna do that, you might as well rebuild it. id say it survived, i just wouldnt do it again...lol

The fact that you didn't run it hard and there was some premix already in the tank probably saved you.
I ran a 3 cylinder 400cc Kawasaki two stoke motorcycle out of 2stroke oil one time....You didn't premix, you just kept the 2cycle oil tank full about every 2-3 tanks of fuel.....only I forgot, and it ran dry at about 90mph one night, which became quite noticable when the engine seized up and the back tire begin to slide.....Fortunately I had enough wits about me that I grabbed a handfull of clutch which kept me from going down on the highway in front of the semi I'd just passed. You'll be surprised to hear that I was able to break the engine loose by squirting oil on top of the piston and rocking the bike back and forth while it was in gear....I eventually got the oil system reprimed and the engine started and ran without issues for another 3 years before I sold it to my little brother and he thrashed on it harder then I did for another 2 years before he sold it....Some motors seem almost bullet proof.

Glad to hear that no damage done. That must have freaked the heck out of you. Just the not knowing.

Agree its always best to have someone check psi on cyl,but it sounded like you had dodged it anyway,as no noise mentioned or holes, sometimes we get lucky.
Generally there is some noise and fair amount of smoke almost to the point one thinks its on fire or bam and holed. Both however one knows theres damage. Not iffy. |

Sounds like you got mighty lucky Cass. I still think that you did the right thing by having the mechanic check it out though. I mean now you have a clean bill of health from the wrench turner himself. Imagine how nervous you would have been the next several trips out had you not taken it to him.
