trolling motor

I need a little help with my trolling motor. I have a 12 volt motor gude 46 lb thrust on a 186 triton alum. bass boat. The problem is man i get blowed all over the place on real windy days in a nutshell it is not big enough. I want to upgrade to a 71 lb thrust motorguide 24 volt system. Here comes my questions. Do I have to run new wire for the 24 volt system. My boat now has a plug on it now that I plug my trolling motor in now,can I use this one now with the 24 volt system. thanks for the help. mount

I did the same thing on mine-upgraded to a 24 volt system. See if you have a third wire along with the two you have hooked up to your batteries. If you do you are good to go. It is wired into the 24 volt section of the plug. Just hook it up to the battery. If not, you can pull the plug and switch the wire from the 12 to the 24 volt connection or run another wire. Then I took the male plug from the 12 volt and put it on the 24, plugged it in and off I went. It seems complicated but it is real easy to do.

hey reb, i looked at my trolling motor today. i pulled the plate that my trolling motor plugs into. i have three wires one orange,one black and the other is red. they are all wire into the plug on the plate. is that all i will need to hook it up with. also i went to my battery and the orange and black are on the negative and the red is on the positive side. so if i have this right all i have to do is hook my batteries in series and mount the trolling motor on the boat. cut my plug off the trolling motor now and splice in on to my new one. thanks mount

On mine it is the orange wire that is the 24 volt. I disconnected the 12 volt from the battery, but it is available if I need it-like I recently did. Bent the shaft on the 24 volt and just got it back yesterday. Used the 12 volt while it was in the shop. Hook the black wire up to the negative on one battery, the + on battery #1 to the - on battery #2 and the 24 volt wire to the positive on battery #2, change the plug and you are good to go. You will like the more powerful motor-I know I sure do!

so i do not need the red wire hooked up to anything now. i think it has a fuse in the wiring harness on it. thanks mount

Nope, not if it is the wire to the 12 V plug. One thing I would suggest is to get a circuit breaker rather than a fuse. I use one of these:

Much easier than an in-line fuse-if the circuit trips a simple flick of the switch and you are back in business as opposed to pulling that in-line fuse out. I've never been able to get one out without breaking it.

Is your trollimg motor 12/24 or just 24 volts. If it is 12 AND 24 you do need the red. The wiring on a 12/24 id different than a straight 24v.
