trailer brakes

towed friends 03 triton with dual wheels and disc brakes. I have the five wire plug and still can not back the boat up without locking the brakes. any ideas?
he bought it used and can not push it backwards. any all help would be nice

if they're electric brakes,i believe you can just unplug the trailer.i have hyd.brakes so basically i'm guessing....otherwise call the dealer.

thanks, These are hydro as well. I do believe a selinode is bad and is not releasing the pressure. guess we will take it in this week to find out the problem.

there is no solenoid in a hyd.brake system(that i know of)..sounds like it might be in the actuator on the trailer tongue.

Correct Basintom. The actuator when backing is not releasing the brakes therefore the pressure is still aplied. Should try to unhook trailer and see what happens. Will tell ya if it is actuator or at the hub.

i have installed those brakes in the past. the fifth wire should be blue and leading up to a selenoid on the back of the actuator. when the vehicle is put into reverse it sends power to the selenoid to keep it from pressurizing. there should be a small hole in the trailer tongue about 1 or 2 inches from the front edge...this is where you can insert your hitch pin to lock the actuator out so that it will not work. try that and if it works that way then the selenoid is either not getting power or it has went bad.

Use a test light at the trailer plug to make sure you are getting power from the back-up lights. That is the wire that releases the pressure from the disc brakes. If you have a 5 pin plug, it may not be wired to the back-up lights. 5 pin is usually right turn, left turn, brake lights, tail lights and ground. You may have to change to a 6 pin plug or run a separate wire from the actuator to the back up light. Unpluging the wires will not work, as when you start to back up the plunger will operate the disc brakes and lock the trailer brakes until you either bleed of the actuator or hit the wire with a 12 volt charge to release the actuator. As Lazer said, there should be a hole or a slot to lock the slide from coming rearward. I don't know if Triton has a mechanism on top like Ranger does, but on a Ranger you can turn the knob on top of the hitch to lock the brakes while you are backing up. You really need to get the problem fixes, as if you stop while going foreward, the brakes will lock up and stay locked up until you release the pressure.

Not sure if this is relevant or not. But when I bought my 2005 Chevy Z71 they gave me a seperate wiring harness to use when pulling a trailer with brakes. Not just your standard plug adapter I used for all of my trailers, since I don't have trailers brakes I nev er needed it. Could be you need a special plug-in to get the trailer brakes working.
