Default New Homebrew Cranks

Did these today while it was raining. Did a couple out of balsa, but the camera died. Let me know what you guys/gals think.

How do you radius them and what do you use to cut out the blanks. They look really good. What other materials do you use? If I can fit one more hobby on my bench it would be making baits. Like to see them when your finished.

I think they're looking great, keys. Keep sending pics as the work progresses. Hopefully we get some fish pics in the near future!

TnTom, I cut the basic shape out with a small bandsaw. Cut the side profile first and then cut the profile from the top. This will cut down on alot of shaping. Once this is done I use a dremel tool with a sanding drum on it to shape the bait. I just freehand this, being careful not to remove too much wood. Once I'm happy with the general shape I grab a piece of med. sand paper and smooth the small imperfections out. Next I move to fine sandpaper to make the bait as smooth as possible. If you are planning on using a solid piece of wire for the eyelets cut the bait in half before you start rounding it off. I'm new to this as well and my first few I used screw in eyelets and premade bills. Biggest fish to date is a 4lber on a homebrew. Use Devcon 2 ton epoxy for eyelets and bill. If you take your time and find the centerline it will make balancing the bait much easier. If you guys want I can take pics of the next set I do and post them to give you a better idea. Hopefully we can learn together. The action of the wood is worth the effort imo.

Keys,

That is some mighty fine shaping. If I had a band saw. That's an excellent tool to have. Did you use the dremel for the popper mouths?

I think it would be great if you posted a tutorial of the steps you take from blank to finish.

66KingFisher, an outstanding luremaker, showed me that we don't have the cut the bait completely in half if we want to use the throughwire method. Just a slot deep enough to accodate the through wire. Let me tell you it's a definite time saver. If he didn't show me this, I would have been cutting my blanks in half completely! Refer to post #23 by 66 for a picture. To sum it up in one word, ingenius.

Yes I did the popper mouths with the dremel. Great tip from kingfisher.
