Default Custom Rod Building Name

The hardest part of wanting to build my own rods is not deciding between spinning vs. casting..........its the name. You have G Loomis and Gary Dobyns namesake rod building companies. I just don't think T Wilson has the same cool factor.

I had something last year, but its lost its zest to me. I have 4 rods to build this winter for myself.............I better get crackin on this. Decisions decisions!

I have the exact same problem Tony. Every rod I've built has had something different on it. I didn't even put anything on the last one because I couldn't decide what to put.

Maybe we can get some suggestions here!

Some people say the name is never important...Its the actions and elements that empower the name....
I mean Dobyns really doesnt sound that cool if you think about it...It sounds like a bread company. But the reputation and product built that name!
I think you should name it something that means alot to you..Fishing or not fishing related...Take a look at what makes you and represent it with one word.

I remember when my Dad pull the Dale Clemens fiberglass rod making book off his shelf and blew the dust off to pass on to me...Then he spent the next week teaching me the fundamentals of rod building.I remember wanting to call my rods something cool,ya know?....Its like trying to think of a band name (which Ive done plenty of too, lol) ...My original idea was Evolution rods and I wanted a hand print with another thumb coming off the other side (six fingers) as a logo
I soon found out that that name was taken by a rod company.Zombie rods was actually another idea because Im a huge zombie nerd...But thats obviously taken too!

I sat one night reading through that book....As I turned a few pages my Dad's old business card fell out....He showed it to me when he gave me the book but I forgot he put it back in there....Nelson bilt rods....He purposely misspelled ''built'' for fun.
And that was it....He raised me,taught me to fish and how to build rods.....So I felt very proud to call it Nelson custom rods (or NCR)....as a tribute to him because it literally change my life.
And that was that.

Good Luck Tony...Lets us know what you come up with!....Some times it comes when you dont think about it.

I will say if I built saltwater rods...Id call it ''Squid piss co''

That is cool Nelson. The theme behind my logo, eventhough I am not a certified business, I think it is still cool to have you name on something you do custom. I am not trying to holy roll on here, but I am a Christian. And I have a strong faith. I know I fall short at times, but I am a faithful Christian. The name just came to me one day, and that is what I felt convicted to stay with in DTC Custom Rods. I place my childrens' initials in the "Jesus Fish" to symbolize protection to surround them and hope that they will one day find their own faith and follow it. Sorry I got off tangent from the post.

Not on a tangent at all. I really like your use of the Christian Fish....I walk along that path too and have been looking for similar Christian designs to use, but haven't found anything as cool as yours. Let me know if a licensing deal can be worked out.

I agree with everybody who posted this already...........Walker's inspiration is touching. I can see how that was an easy decision once the pieces fell into place.

CiK comes from "Cincinnnati Kid". I used to travel quite a bit for work, and spent a lot of time in a really small town in Austria. I met a few guys over there that I still call my friends. They used to call me Cincinnati Kid.

That story is cool, but incorporating my family and faith is where I will end up...............I think.

What about "Cik Stiks". It may be a bit reminiscent of Carrot Stix but I think it could work.

Just a thought.....

I've recently started selling some of my photographs at a local consignment/home furnishing store (they do consignment and have booth rental for people who want to sell stuff). While searching the internet for good names for a photography "business" I came across a great article. I can't find the link now, but the gist of it was to use your own name for a couple reasons.

The main reason was so people associate your product with you, not just a random company name. And this same thing applies to building fishing rods. People will remember you and your product by your name. It may also make it easier for them to find you if you've met them or something, as long as you don't have a very common name.

Nice story! However, if you ever do get around to making the saltwater rods, I really like where you're headed with Squid Piss, but as a play on words, I'd modify it to, "Squid Piss, Inc." (or Ink) Glad to see you build with lami blanks. I'll have to keep that in mind.

I too find it hard to name things. When I make lures to put into my daughter's school auction, and although no such real company exists, I use, "Islandbass Bait Co." I am sooooooo creative.

I went through this when I was setting up my LLC. As a pilot, 90% of the time you are hired on as a contractor, so it pays to have your own Liability Insurance and a recognizable name for your LLC. I tried forever to find a name that was realted to my love for my State, but everything I came up with was used already.

I have added motivation, because i eventually want to start my own flightschool and need a name for that similar or the same as my LLC. So I did research and found teh same info as BB.... use your own name.... thus Walker Aeronautics was born.

I think it looks good Tony. One thing to consider is the logo would have to be really small to go on a smaller diameter blank, otherwise it would wrap all the way around and touch itself. I would also play with using uppercase/lowercase letters, it will be much easier to read than all caps.

Just a few things to consider, I think it looks good.

I like it T. Like Joe and Waff said though, you might have to play around with fonts a little and address the issue of getting it small for the blank. If you could get it down to 3/4" circle cut, it would make an awesome butt cap inlay.

Thanks guys! All good points, so I created a few more ideas. The hardest part will be deciding which to go with.

I really like the inlay idea, and will pocket that one for a later day. Here is the one I think i am going with. Again, all silver text/symbol.
