Plus how much for the boat, motor, tackle, etc? There is a big difference in the amount needed for a 14 foot jonboat and a 17 foot bass boat.

Not sure what kind of boat you are in, which will make a big difference, but I am in a 17.5' fiberglass and have a 65# 24V Minnkota. This is the minimum I would want on this boat. It does great, but can have a hard time going into the wind on a real windy day.
A trolling motor can be a safety devise in my opinion and if you don't have enough power, could really get into a bad situation on a windy day.

My wife always said its more the length of the shaft then the thrust behind it... cant remember if it was about trolling motors or not though.. I'll check..

I have the same thing a 16ft John Boat with a 6hp Johnson and my 45lb Thrust 12v Minnkota is more than enough. If I put it on 5 I almost fall out of the boat when it first starts up...

I'd agree with Leroy. i used to have a 12' boat with a 36 pound thrust, but wish I had a little more. Go 45#.

Don't know if this will help, but I have a 15 foot wide-side fiberglass canoe with a 17# thrust troll. motor. On a calm day(with our tackle,me and my buddy;120lbs each, poles, etc) with the troll. motor set on 4 we can cruise quite well. On a windy day with the aforementioned equip., on 4, we can cut through the wind quite well, just wears battery down faster.

With TMs the bigger the better, theoretically speaking a boat like mine ( 12 ft tub ) would have enough with a 30 pounder ....... yeah, right , in calm weather the 30 pounder is enough until the wind begins blowing, a little wind and 30 pounds is not enough , should have purchased a 36 or 45 pounder instead , the difference in price was minimal.

Get the largest you can afford, but keep in mind once you go to 24V, you'll need an extra battery, a place to store it, and the extra 60-70 pounds to consider.

How much thrust
Get as much as you can stand. Regardless of the length, weight and capacity, you can never have enough. High winds and waves can put you
in need. If, your going with 12Volt, max thrust may be up to so called 60 pounds. It will take 1 pound of thrust per 100 weight to move a boat. Figure the weight and capacity and now account for weather conditions. Now you'll know what your up against. My boat is small,I use a 54lb. thrust according to the mfgr. rating LIKE @#% it is. I wish I could of gone one model up. |

Me and my dad use a 14' V-Hull with no real motor and we were looking into getting a 45# TM for use in small lakes and reserviors near by where gas motors are not allowed. Think it should be enough??

How did I know that would end up being mentioned before this thread was over?

i know the boat is small and doesnt require all that much, but do yourself a favor, get a 24 volt setup, never look back. It is night and day on battery life!!!
