Default Spinning and Baitcasting

Now that I have one of each, I don't know what to rig with which rod!
I hear that for finesse fishing you should use spinning rods? (or just whippy tips?) How come I see pros finesse fishing with baitcasters? Why do they switch from baitcasting to spinning? I just don't know what baits to use with certain polls.

Please clarify if you could.

Thanks a lot,

Julien

J-for the most part spinning gear is for lighter baits like finesse baits, small topwaters and small crankbaits. Baitcasters are the heavy duty rods-worms, jigs, pitching and flipping, heavy cover, etc.

The pros you see switching are using lighter baits-shakey head rigs, drop shot, etc.

I keep maybe 15-20 rods in the boat, and only one is a spinning rod if that gives you an idea.

I use alot of spinning, because I havent mastered baitcasting. I think you should trust your own instincts, and find out what you like, the pros have their own things going, and you shouldn't always follow what they do. Spinning is usually used for finesse. When precisioon is the key, then use whatever your best with, as bait placemant is important. Follow what you think will work best, and if it doesn't then change it. Simple as that!

Reb do you really only have one spinning rod in your boat?

Wow! 15-20 rods! I'm only on 2. I've got a ways to go!

What do you usually rig them with?
What is the difference between finesse and worms?

Pretty much. Only use it for shakey head rigs. I did have 3-one I just never used and one for dropshotting. Didn't like to dropshot with a spinning rod so got a Falcon Coastal Topwater casting rod-light action-and dropshot with that. Have to give Flyrod credit for showing me that one.

J, that is only the ones I take. I have a bunch more I don't take or even use anymore. Guys like Zooker, Bassintom, PnJ and JB are the same way-we've all been "collecting" them for a loooong time.

What do I rig them with? I have something different tied on all but 3, and those are for T-rigs which has a different soft plastic on each when they are not in the rod box, set up for small to large soft plastics. I also have 3 crankbait rods-1 lipless crankbait, 1 shallow runner and 1 deep runner. Then I have one that is kind of a "universal" rod, which is a 6-6 MH rod that I use for buzzbaits, chatterbaits, and baits like spoons or tailspinners.

Finesse is a term for a small bait. A regular worm is 6 inches or longer where a finesse worm is 4 inches. A regular jig is usually 3/8 ounce and up where a finesse jig is 1/4 ounce and smaller.

I carry 5-8 rods w/ me. Lately Ive been down to 5 w/ only 1 spinning setup. This is used for my lightweight soft plastics, my other spinning rods are set up drop shot and I forget how the other is rigged right now. I for the most part can cast whatever Im using on a baitcaster now. Hated them at first but now prefer them over spinning.

I am 13, and have around 16 rods, which is alot for a kid! Once your really into fishing, you'll have special rods for each technique, and you will start to slowly upgrade, into a better quality setup. I am moving slowly more towards baitcasters.

Right now I've got three spinning reels, on three different lenghts of poles. One for each kind of fishing I do. I've got my 7' Rapala for deep crankbaits, chatterbaits, and the bigger worms in heavy cover. Then I've got a quantum 6'6" for small cranks, spinner baits, and topwater. And then I've got my trust ol' 5'6" Shakespeare for my 7" worms. Sounds weird, I know, But I've had better luck with that pole on 6 pound line, than I have with anything else.

I prefer spinning for weightless plastics, skipping anything, and c-rigging. Most everything else is baitcasting.

Both are tools to me and each will have its advantages over the other. The usual difference regular plastics and "finesse" plasctics is the size. The finesse plastics are usually just smaller versions (typiclly 4" and less) of same regular plastics.

Even with that said, I carry three set ups with me since I am relegated to the shore/dock. Two casting and one spinning. It doesn't mean I don't care for spinning. Ideally I'd love 2 of each but lugging 3 rods with a tackle bag through the brush can be a pain as it already suck and having the 4th set up is something I am not willing to do.

BC 1 - Jerk or crank bait (Med) or topwater
BC 2 - Some type of plastic (Senko, beaver, etc) or jig (MH)
SP 1 - Drop Shot, Ultralight lures, spinners, etc) (L/UL/Finesse)

I have other set ups, but 3 rods for sure.
