Default Props for smaller motor/more HP

As most of you may know, we've only got 15hp on our Tracker Deep-V.

Of course, it's not the fastest boat, but it works for the smaller inland lakes we fish. At the end of last fall, we took it out on Lake Erie and the Detroit River, but it was about an hour or more run at 8-9MPH.

My dad wants to get a new, bigger motor, but we can't afford one. So, we thought maybe changing the prop could give us a bit more horse power. any idea or suggestions on the prop or something else to give a few extra horses?

Now, I pretty much know all of nothing when it comes to boat motors, props, etc, other than some basics, so some explination of suggestions would be great! thanks.

ok first with a heavy loaded boat with a lil 15 weight is the key.. no prop will get you more than 3 mph faster on this currant boat/moter set up..a stainless prop would be a first step. but then again it is just a 15 horse moter..

what size tracker boat was this again??

i know of 2 merc's right now that are for sale.. the 40 i know very lil about.
now the 1972 80 horse has 160 pounds of compression in EVERY HOLE...has been repaired -stater- and lake tested on an old glastron..ran excellent the dude wants $650.

BB,

First of all, I'm not an expert, but a new prop wouldn't give you more horsepower, would it? Maybe speed, but not hp.

Changing the tires on a car (in this place, a prop), isn't going to give you more horsepower. You engine is still 15 horsepower, through and through. When you said "more horsepower", did you mean more speed?

Zooker, it's a 16ft boat. The guy we bought it from used it on mostly a 9.9hp only lake, so the dealer he bought it from put a 15 on it w/ 9.9 stickers.

My dad didn't really want anything older than the boat (2001 I believe), but if its in good condition, I can't see why not.

I think the boat is rated fo a 60hp max motor, so that rules out the 80. Any more info on that 40 though?

Buzzy, I didn't really mean more horse power, but more speed. But I'm sure there's something we could do to add a bit more horsepower as well.

no bama no need for that. the merc 15 is a restricted 20-think restrictor plates in nascar-. i belive it is a intake/carb impelment i am not positive on how or what is changed. but i do know that the 15,20,and 25 all use the same cubic inch block.

the 15 would be kinda like puttin a 550 cfp carb on a 350 chevy moter that is designed for the 750cfp carbs.which if you change it up to a 1150cfp carb set up..LET ME STATE IS NOT QUITE THIS EASY..but you get the idea..

i know for a fact it can be done. i have after all turned up a 50 horse yamaha to hit 41+gps which is putting out 68 horse to the prop shaft.in original configuration it was putting out 49 horse power to the prop shaft. it was a combo of carbs and ingition systems change.. yes it is still "stock" just running at it's best performance..

dynoin anything aint cheap. but i know some one, who knows a certain person, who operates a dyno for a certian nascar team..and lets leave it at that..
