crankbait
Today I charged up the Dremel, and bought some balsa so I could start making my first crankbait. I'm using basically a Rapala style body to start with then I might adjust the shaping a little, and experiment. Any suggestions, and where can I get the stuff to make a lip? Oh yeah, I found this great stuff, called "model sandpaper" , it's a 5 pack of small, reusable sheets of sandpaper, with the grits ranging from 150 to 630 (the highest I have ever heard of).

I purchased some Lexan for the diving bills and you also can buy pre-made diving bills online.

I dont want anything "premade" I want to make 100% of this crankbait, so where can you buy Lexan and how do you get the hook ties, I know thats wrong I dont know what they're called though.

The hook eyes I used were from an online supplier. The line ties, I made out of stainless steel wire which I epoxied to the crankbait. Check out Tackle Underground and it will help you a bunch. Just go on and check out the tutorials on the site. There are several. Good luck.

crank baits if you don't know how to make em can be hard. and slight adjustment you make can make the bait do weird things. also you got to weight them. got to know how to set the angle and length of the bill ect.. good luck with it don't get mad if it don't work the first time round.

ooh crankbaits... i love making em. although it can be extrmemly hard, especially weighting... i hate that part, i just love it when a eprson asks me to make an unweighted lure anyways... take wire. about 2 inches of it. put a nail in the middle. pinch the wire over the nail with pliers, itll make a small loop. then with one pair of pliers hold that part, with another pair, twist. dont let it bend. itll make a screw eye. and if you cant afford lexan for any reason.. go with plexiglas. about an 8th of the price, but its more brittle. oh and dont use the dremel all the way. just do basic shaping with it and the rest with sandpaper. 150 grit will be too slow, get yourself some 34 or 600 grit.

I know I was up till 2 but I am extremely satisfied with it. I am going to buy batteries for my camera to post some pics and while I'm out out I will be buying paint, should I get model paint? I was thinking model spray paint for the basecoat(s), and maybe the sealer. Then handpainting the details.
Any suggestions?

yep. try airbrushing. much more detail. handpainting isnt so great. cant wait to see pics. if you dont want an airbrush, use spray paint. try to get the tips for them so you can alter the spraying diameter. at michaels you can get a badger starter airbrush for about 20 bucks. comes with airbrush (single action) and a spray can. then a set of 7 airbrush paints is 20 bucks. look in sundays paper, they have 50% off every week. same for rag shop. use white as basecoat.

Actually somewhere in the basement is a big 300$ airbrush kit my dad bought a year ago to paint a bunch of tables, it has a big one and a detail one, for now I will have to use model paints until my dad gives me permission to use this but I think it will work.
And thanks for the help.
