Default Huge Crappie

Guys,
Caught this crappie Wed. on a orange rattle-l-trap. Caught another one just at 10 inches. We also caught 7 bass, none as big as this freakin crappie though! What a fattie (the fish was fat too!). Anyone else ever catch big crappie on fast moving bass lures?

If you squeezed the tail it was almost 19inches, weighed 2 lbs. 9 oz. At the risk of sounding like a poor excuse for a sportsman...she made some damn nice fillets! I always say I'm going to do more crappie fishing but never do. I have even set out for a day to do it in the spring. But once I see a couple of big females cruising around the shallows I can't stand it and have to start flippin. Need more will power I guess.

God Bless.

That was, a nice fish. I have caught some huge papermouths before, but nothing like that. I have caught them on rattle traps too, and even on crankbaits. I usually catch them on accident, I can't remember the last time I went out to fish for crappie.

I do the night time crappie thing when the heat gets too unbearable to be out on the lake during the day. Catching those babies at night is fun!!!

Oh, darn good eating too!!!

Default CFR for crappie

Do not feel bad about eating Crappie. Did you know that you are being a conservationist by eating them? It is true that if the population of Crappie are not culled they will overpopulate, shrink in size and then disappear due to disease.

Since crappie do not eat each other like bass, they have no check system built in. You are the check system. Eat them up. Practice Catch Filet and Remove for the sake of the fish..

Within limits mind you..

that one has some shoulder for sure. At Kentucky lake in a month you'll be able to get ones near that big in the openings of coves. Like Mike states,
take a limit and fillet them up!

Default Netters

Six years ago a group of watermen got a bunch of crappie in there pound nets. They took them up to Washington DC Fish Market and sold them to some fish mongers. Big sign said "Crappie 1 buck a pound" and they sold zero of the fish the first day. Second day they sold four pounds out of the 200 lbs they had. Third Day they changed the sign to "Rainbow Perch 1 buck a pound" and sold the remaining 196 lbs in one day to hundreds of customers.

It is all in a name.

Yes I used to catch some nice slabs on spinnerbaits LOL. Also on some flukes, and fast moving jerkbaits. I've lost more than caught due to my hooksets though rotfl. Very nice fish, that's a heck of a crappie/speck(that's what they call them here in Florida).

I've been bassfishing before and set the hook hard, only to find a pair of crappie lips on my hook when I reeled it in, with no fish attached.
Like they say "paperlips' is so true!

A crappie that big competes with smaller sized bass for food. I say eat everyone you catch.

FWC actually recomends NOT stocking ponds with crappie for that very reason.

I very rarely keep any fish but in panfish I will usually throw the really big ones back and keep the medium sized fish. I read somewhere that this keeps the population balanced because they spawn better, have no idea if that is true or not?

Default Crappie Fished once

While visiting cousins in Charlotte NC- I was reclining on the couch after a long day of beers and BBQ when the cousin I was staying with disappeared out the back door. when I asked his wife where he was she told me he was out getting the boat ready. We went crappie fishing all night and had a ball. It was either lake norman or lake wiley - I can't recall which. I'll have to ask him. We caught a mess of crappies and spent the next morning filleting them.
FYI - The same cousin just won a striper tournament on Lake Norman - I didn't realize there were striper there, but he emailed me the link to the Charlotte paper article - so I had to believe it!

Default 8 pound striper

winning fish was just over 8lbs- I guess the tournament was just largest fish. They troll for them with planar (sp) boards? doesn't sound like as much fun as a spinner bait or some topwater rig!

Yeah, down here at KY Lake, you can fill out a limit of 14"+ crappies in no time using shad raps and Little N's. My biggest was 19.75" long, but not from KY Lake. It was from a big lake in my neighborhood, caught on a 5" tube.

Some were large, some were not. Dat's OK, de grease was hot. Mmmmmmm...I loves me some crappie.

The last time I was at the Louisville BPS we were there at feeding time for the fish in the aquarium. They tossed in dry food as well as live shiners. The crappie were by far the most aggressive fish in the tank and they weren't messing with anything but the shiners. They had some nice stripers and a 10 lb large mouth in the tank.

I caught a 14" crappie on a spinnerbait last summer. Didn't even know that they were in the pond I was fishing.
