Snakehead Found In AR
http://www.katv.com/news/stories/0408/515767.html
This is bad... I've linked the first story I found on a local news site, the tv report said a local fish farmer spotted one of these little monsters "wiggling up a gravel road". The Game and Fish started tossing catfish ponds and they showed three or four dead ones. |

That is bad-very bad. Hopefully they will eradicate them before they spread.

On a serious note, snakeheads are coming at some point in most people's lifetime. There is a possibility this could be a good thing.
This is a fish. Not a muscle. Not hydrilla. People are going to find out how to catch them. They are reputedly fantastic eating. Have habits similar to a bowfin. If the states just never put a limit on their harvest, we fishermen might be able to keep em in check and get some good eating at the same time. I also heard that when they did a study of the contents in the stomachs of some of the infected places, they didn't find bass.

They've invaded the river but I've only seen one myself in the water. One was weighed in this past weekend. And they taste like chicken. Actually I've never eaten one but I posted a pic of a limit of them last fall. Guys took them to a local restaurant and had them cooked up.

I just think they are too ugly to live and should be eradicated.... Oh wait, following those criteria somewhere upwards of half of us would need to be eradicated...

Where is Lee County, AR? Hopefully nowhere close to the mighty Mississippi. If them suckers get to Ol' Muddy, they'll be able to cover 2/3 of the country in a few years.
Bama, I haven't heard of any over in your area, but that don't mean they're not there. Here's a pic, too: |

The entire state of Arkansas, as far as I know, drains into the mississippi at some point or other.

that pic MB put up is pretty good. but the one they found here is of the Northern species and I dnon't think they don't get that big.
Lee county is in the delta region, eastern part of the state. And yes any stream, creek or river we have somehow finds its way to the Mississippi. I just know that what I learned from a Nat Geo special on them, we don't want them but once they are in your waters it's too late. Hell they can spawn up to 5 times a year! |

we actually have two species of thesnakehead in the states right now , the problem with the species is 1 female lays like 100,000 eggs a year and they can live out of water for like 26 hours . I saw a guy on tv take one put it in a cooler on his deck with no water in it when it was 90 degrees out , he left it there for 8 hours in the sun when he came back to it and threw it in water it woke up and started swimming again . but short of killing everything in the water ways they are in there is no way to get rid of them or manage the populations they are on the goverment list of kill on sight fish so don't release one if you do catch it ..

they spawn so fast that they over power native fish populations . check your local states dep web site they should have an aquatic nusience list and any fish on that list is to be killed if caught . but the real problem is our rivers and lakes do not have the snakheads natural predators which keep the populations in check over seas so they hurt our local fish populations

Big head asian carp. They taking over the river. The only way i release them is being used for cut bait. The blue cats & flatheads love them as cut bait more than shad. That right there may be some kind of signal.

There you go Doc, snakes on a plane - the first movie that was ever, as far as I can tell, actually made on a message board.
Seriously, that line "I am sick and tired of these mutha$($( snakes on this mutha%*$* plane" and as I heard the casting of samuel l jackson were all because some guy on a movie message board suggested that it would be funny...

They're evaisve species. I wonder why we dont push for the commercial harvest of these fish. Do it in away that'z not destructive to our fishery. Then we could sell these nasty carp, snakehead & such to China in an open market. Once a fail safe method is developed. We fish these fish out of our water tell there nonexistant it can be done. We did that to the american fishery in the teens,20's & 30's. But look i am thinking of fail safe methods that would target harvest only these fish out of our waters.

I'll bet you could make some sweet lookin belts, hatbands, boots etc. out of 'em. All we gotta do is make snakehead leather fashionable, and that'll put 'em out pretty quick. As an in the closet trash fisherman, I'd kinda like to catch a few

I hope the ugy who spotted the one "wiggling up the gravel road" ran it over, or chopped its head off or something. Stupid snakeheads.
