New World Record white crappie, 6 lbs 1 oz, caught this morning around 8:30 CST
at Grenada Lake, Mississippi.

This info was posted yesterday, followed by this:

We're working on getting pictures. This is fresh, fresh news, so hang on while we get more details. We do know that it was weighed by a certified scale, and it's being certified right now as a new record.

If all is legit, I am sure there will be pictures everywhere very soon.

I live pretty close to Grenada and I've been trying to find out smething. I saw a picture on crappie.com and I've also heard that it was snagged. So, nothing confirmed should know something soon. My sister-in-law works for the corps of egineers and although she didn't work today she will be able to find out if its true.

Don't know. They have a snagging season below the spillway. The manager of the lake said he hasn't heard of a new record, he's checking it now. Every-so-often these rumors of a new record will start going around. Just a few years ago there was one that biologist had shocked one up that was over 6

Aahhhhh! I've never heard of a snagging season. If that's the case, it should count then

A foul hooked fish wouldn't count on Grenada because its illegal on the main lake.

That depends on the state regulations. I believe California is one of the states that requires fish be hooked inside of the mouth, I only mention Cali cuz I think that was the state it came up in, during a BM tourney.

I really have no idea. All I know is, when I used to snag as a kid, we kept our eyes peeled for the DNR! It's not easy to run in waders....

In Ohio a fish must be hooked inside the mouth as well to be counted legal. Same goes in our tournaments. It really sucks having to throw back a nice keeper (LM or SM) because it is hook on the outside of the mouth and not the inside... but so be it.

I actually have no idea on the law in Michigan, although I would bet it's the same as yours.
I'd look it up, but I'm catch n release anyways lol

By snagged do they mean intentionally "snatched" like with a treble? or just foul hooked?
I can't be the only crankbait fan that has caught dozens+ of bass everywhere but in the mouth.

Snagging is snatching with a treble hook but it can also refer to a foul hooked fish. In the case of crappie it doesn't matter if its foul hooked with a jig or crank bait. If its not in the mouth its not legal. (MS) They will actually check the scales on the fish for signs of being snagged.

My that's intense. It would be my luck to catch a WR fish on a crank and be disqualified just because a trailing thrashing hook nicked the outside of it's head. ...

By snagged, I usually think intentional.
Personally, I think an unintentional foul hooked fish should count. Not positive, but I would think if I caught a state record bass, through the ice in January, it should count. Even though it's not bass season. But at the same time, how does someone look at the hookset and say that the fish was crosseyed, and missed the lure with it's mouth?

Too complex for my brain

On a side note, snagging is often referred to (by the DNR) around here, as "force feeding"...
Yeah....cuz a rainbow trout has the ability to feed through his dorsal fin.....

I personally think if you hook the fish on its head, in front of the gills, it should count. I believe that in the vast majority of those cases, the fish had the intent to hit your lure and just missed.

Personally, I agree with that statement.
If states have a law to the contrary, I think they're just eliminating all doubt. Which, of course, could screw a guy out of a record.

I'm sure most of us here, have set the hook on a fish, reeled him in, and found that the lure wasn't in the mouth.
I certainly have

3 weeks ago I heard a rumor about a world record white crappie being caught on ky lake... even saw a picture(trying to look it up now)... was told it weighed 6 pounds... turned out to be a fake...

I think this is the same rumor moving to different parts of the country... I could be wrong and this might be one hell of a coincidence...

I saw the 5# Gill caught in Alabama (on a wall). I don't have pans big enough for a panfish like that
