it wont ruin the hook set...these fish are so powerful that they will force your drag to peel out...

OK I'm all set, thanks guys.

tom- thanks for the site... And yes, i couldv'e gone to a catfishing site, but that would mean joining a new forum and popping up with a random question they probably hear all the time. I googled, and had the basic idea, just needed all the other details.
and i see you took the time to edit "cranky" into "stinky"

Mack I in no way meant to bust on your technique if it came out that way. I was just stating what I have found and yes I do give it a little tug after a few reels, not sure if it was mis comm..

I use these type hooks, for wacky rigs, and for bass, I do a very short, quick, powerful snap to my left, after two revolutioons of my rod handle.

Raw chicken liver works the best due to the real blood that is comeing off the chicken. Catfish like that
1st. Mix in some garlic
2nd. Mix in some vanilla
3rd. and add anything u think smells
4th. put in a panty hose
5th. go out and hammer those cats

Yeah, I change the drag on big fish, but on a smaller fish, If you ain't real familiar with your drag, you can loosen it too much, and then overcompensate by tightening too much, and lose your fish. Never happened to me, but I've seen friends lose fish this way.

I can see what you mean, my personally preference, is to leave my drag, to where even a small fish could take it out, and that way if I get one, I'll hear it. Although sometomes, they'll take your bait, and just sit there. As for bass fishing, I leave my drag, pretty loose, that way I don't kill 'em on the hookset, cause I set hard!

I don't fish tourneys yet, so I'm a light tackle guy as much as I can be. I obviously don't flip and fish slop with light stuff, but in open water fishing, I like 8 pound mono. I keep the drag so I can cross eyes when I set the hook, but they can still run if need be. Then I might tinker with it while I fight. Drag is much more important (for smaller fish) on spinning gear than it is with baitcasting.

I use 8lb mono, on a mh rod, in open water, usually with t-rigged worms. I don't tourney fish yet, as I don't have a boat.

No problem.
I was actually trying to concur, in a way, with what you said.
