Default Chine walk?

I've heard this term used before but don't know what it means. Is it more prevalent in certain makes of boats? Why does it occur and what is it? Thanks

Bob

You don't drive out of it, especially if you're not a full hand at driving. You can't, you're making some critical errors in both your thought process and your mechanics.

If you are reacting to what the boat is doing, you'll always be behind it. Which will only make your attempts worse, not better at correcting. You do not drive "out" of it, you drive to prevent it from starting.
Driving your boat is a steady series of left turns against the prop torque, with slight right adjustments. You're not going down the lake sawing your wheel back and forth.
Your prop is spinning to the right, and the force of that will try to flop everything to the right with it. Your hull wants to go straight, but can't against the force, this is the battle you're fighting.
Think of riding a skate board in a 60 mph cross wind. You have to lean against the force, and make small corrections as needed. Small steps, learn to control your boat one mph at a time. Take off, and practice a series of sweeping left turns, trimming and throttle as you go, this should prevent it from starting to wobble. Try going straight, then back to your left turn, pretty soon, you will feel what it's like to be in balance, and how small the corrections are to compensate. Before long, you'll learn the act, and the little light will come on. And raising your motor will *usually* tame some wobble. But, you'll have more wheel torque, so it'll be harder to steer against it. Compromises.

just about every boat that goes over 70..the side to side is actually the boat falling of the pad.then climbing back on then falling off again repeatedly. this is only cured by turning into the chine..all boats with standard outboards fall off the pad to the RIGHT. turning to the LEFT like your making a 10 mile circle is the ONLY correction. SEAT TIME IS THE ONLY WAY TO LEARN TO CONTROL CHIN WALK..

I've seen guys try to sand that J pad under the boat to help reduce the chine walk, I think bombers advertise the least amount in thier boats, but theres a lot of variables.

here this video will show how to correct the boat.. but EVERY boat tends to handle differantly..-this guy propusely trys to get it to chin walk hence the hand off the wheel-do NOT attempt this. the guy has 30+ years of boat driving so he knows what he is doing..

Zooker gave the a great link on chine walking. Just about any and all high performance bass boats will chine walk. Some worse then others. Seat time is the best way to learn to drive a boat that chines. You can't really drive thru it, but with seat time you will learn what quick little adjustments you need to make to correct the boat, and never let off the gas. An example of difference with driving a different boat. With like a Triton, BassCat, Skeeter you have to make small quick snaps of the wheel in the direction of the chine walk to strighten out the boat, now with a Blazer or Gambler you don't snap the wheel, but more like massage it, you have to be very smooth with that kind of boat!! And believe it or not Hydaulic steering makes it harder to correct then cable steering.
