Tips and tricks for horny toads

Let me preface this quick infomercial by stating that I go thru about 20-30 bags a year on my boat.

Trick #1 put a bobber stop then a bead then several bite guards on line before hook.
Bite guards are used in offshore trolling. They look like three prong pieces of plastic.


These are close but not the right shape. These beads interlock and create a red or green looking gill plate or tree frog look.
The bobber stop snugs to the bead and holds the tri beads in place in front of the hook.
The result is the beads deflect all debris from the hook and keep the frog in place.
Tip#2 Rig the hook backwards. I use a big 5/0 red Gammi wide gap hook. I run thru the nose and out between the eyes. The point goes in the tant area. Just the little bit of plastic at the end of the slit. This will allow better hook clearance on the set.
Tip#3 Try the double hook frog hooks with the screw in keeper from Tacklewarehouse and push thru legs and skin on opposite side.
Tip#4 Use heavy braid 40lb to 30lb and tie directly to hook.
Tip#5 Throw on spinning rod deep as you can into pad fields. The more water you cover the better.
Tip#6 Point rod at lure in deep cover and just reel. Never add any thing to it. Just reel.
Tip#7 In open water elevate rod half way to keep line off water.
