First home made spinnerbait
Put my first spinnerbait together today and just had to try it out!
3/8 oz body, bluegill skirt, 4" watermelon grub on the trailer. Started with a small hammered blade. Lost it and had to snag a longer style blade from a wally world bait. Overcast skies fresh from the rains, 3:30-6:30 PM 2 best bass went 2.8 and 3.4 Pics of the testing grounds and fish. Caught 5 or 6 more pike but they were 1/2 the size of the pictured one.

Good Deal, Mallen.
It sounds like you had some great conditions to fish. Right after the rain is one of my favorite. ~Mark |

Thanks guys. It was a thrill but, as some of you probably already know, puttin a spinnerbait together is kinda like buying a Leggo airplane kit and building an airplane lol. Not much to it, although I do need to tweak the blade set-up.
Just put a couple more together with a #7 barrel swivel and an o-ring. Should definitely be an improvement. Hey nofear, you like catching pike? I rarely do it on purpose, but I do plan on checking out a cove on Platte Lake up here. Supposedly that's where the BIG pike lurk. Since I'm rained out of work today I gotta try and find a dry spell and get back out to the lake!

Mallen, I guess it would be more accurate to say I MISS catching pike, since I haven't caught one in 30 years. But I remember how hard they hit, and how much they thrash around. I don't miss the slime.

great job Mallen.......man,i wish we had pike, they look like fun to fight!
question: what does the barrel swivel do for a spinner?...does it give the it more natural action or something?.....i got a ton of them, but never though of using them with spinners.

Nice job Mallen!! Why don't you have a picture of you lipping the pike?????
WJ, they do put up a little fight mostly at the boat. Usually the guys up here try NOT to chatch them. I can't tell you how many lures I've lost or wrecked because of those darn toothy critters. |

So the barrel swivel connected to the o-ring, connected to the blade Pike can be fun to fight, if they're big, but generally they're so thin that you can pull them through the water pretty easily. In fact, within a few seconds, you know whether you have a bass or pike

Headed back out today to try to dodge the rain drops and get some more fish.
10-2, overcast, windy and rainy. Got another half dozen of each, bass and pike. All of them were on the bluegill pattern but 1 or 2, which hit on the white/chartreuse. The grand finale of the day was a new personal best. 4.5 pounds. Made it all worthwhile to fool a scarred up old war horse like this one.

Thanks! Yeah, the pads and structure are insane on that lake. I've gotten my boat hung up a few times on underwater stumps.

Way to go Mallen. I've been making my own spinnerbaits for a couple years now and I'm hooked, lol. It's fun to do and you can come up with any pattern size and color you want to try. So far, my best spinnerbait has been a 3/8 oz tandem with a dark bluegill pattern skirt. It has a #2 silver colorado for the front blade and a #4.5 gold willow for the back blade. I've been killin the bass this year on it. ^5 Just currious as to where you purchased your spinnerbait heads?

The heads, skirts, trailer hooks and swirl tail grubs. The blades I picked up locally. BTW....I'm gonna copycat your pattern!

So are Pike not any good to eat?....sum kinda scrubfish or sumthin?? The only pike I ever caught was when I was in my pre-teen years, I went fishing during a family reunion at my uncles home in Mammoth Springs Arkansas.....there is an underwater spring that feeds straight up into this small 10 acre lake....the spring is so strong it just boils the water out in the middle of the lake....and the thing dumps over 9 million gals an hour which flows into the spring river.....We fished off the dam with canned corn and caught a ton of the these little 8" long fish everyone was calling pike....I thought they were cool, but since that time I've seldom ever heard anyone say anything good about a pike.....just wondering.

Yeah, pike are the "smash and dash" guys of the fish world. There is no doubt at all if a pike hits. It's usually at a hundred miles an hour, and he wants to get back to his hiding spot just as fast. Between that and their teeth, you need to set your drag carefully if you don't use heavy line.
They cook up just fine...flaky white meat a lot like bass if you ask me, as long as you cut out the strip in the fillet with the bones. 66Kingfisher, it would surprise me if what you caught was a Northern Pike, though it is not impossible if that spring was very cold and clear. The term "pike" gets thrown around way too much. People even call walleye "walleye pike" sometimes...when it's a perch truth be told. Wacky fishermen...
