Saltwater/Freshwater Rod and Reel

I was wondering what your thoughts were on getting a rod that would be good for both fresh and salt water fishing. It can't cost a fortune.

Pretty much any rod in the 6-7ft range , M-MH power will do for some bass fishing and inshore saltwater. Bass Pro Shops has a good selection of house-brand rods at reasonable prices, like the Extreme and Bionic Blade series. They go on sale a couple times a year which makes them even more affordable.

It depends, saltwater fishing ....... what kind of saltwater fishing you plan to do or what you expect to catch while fishing in saltwater?

I don´t do a lot of salt water oftenly but for light saltwater fishing I fish with my regular bass fishing gear ( jack, trout, redfish, mackarel, pargo, small tarpon ).

I would try this set up for both large bass to inshore sized fish.

Both are quality and will be the most versitile. Be sure to get medium heavy action rod though

i use fenwick medium heavy or heavy action casting sticks both in fresh water and salt.. as long as i am targeting inshore back water fish-trout, redfish, flounder,blues- you wont have much problem. i have caught tons of red drum on a heavy action bass casting rod. nothing puts up a fight that a old drum does inculding a 5 foot long hammer head..

while i do use salt spefic rod/reel set ups they are the same rods i use for bass angling..intercoastal reels i like better than your average bass reels..

The trick here is to try and match the rod specs with the type of saltwater fishing you intend to do. I'm planning next year to do some party boat fishing in Long Island sound for Porgies and fluke. For Porgie fishing for the most part we'll be in water less then 50 ft using lead sinkers of 3 oz or less. So I'm planning on using a 7'0" M rod. For Fluking in the same waters, I'll go with a MH rod. Both rod will have a Abu Garcia C3 5500 reel spooled with 30 lb Braid and a 6 ft 17lb mono leader. When fishing for Blues, I don't have a freshwater rod that could handle it, so I have a dedicated Saltwater setup for that.

Most saltwater rods are built beefier, stronger guides, a thread wrap on the blank for protection before a guide is added, rust and corrosion resistant handles ...

I fish brackish water with my standard bass rods all the time.

Just make sure after any of your tackle hits salt water, to rince it off w/ fresh water immediately.

Well said. Everything always got a complete riinse with the hose once I got home, including every nook and cranny in my saltwater reels. I would never consider using a freshwater reel in the salt.

It all depends what type of saltwater fishing... Although an all purpose rod that did wonders to me was:

BPS Johnny Morris Signature Series 2pc ML Rod 6'6" (amazin sensitivity), and its not flimzy. On sale now for 79.99. Paired with Shimano Exceller 2500, great drag and i love its smoothness. Its the same as the japanese CY2500 series, althought the color and the handle is a bit different. I used it for my dropshot, split shot, texas, hardbait, and some spinnerbait (lighter ones),casting and did wonders for me... Just had to adjust the timming and how i held my rod to hook set the fish. I caught California Halibutt (16lbs), Calico, Sandbass, Croacker, Perch, LMB, Trout, etc on this... this is one of my favorite rod.
