Plants, vegitation, anything that gives "cover" to the fish or whatever lives in that water.

one lone stick will not be cover..more like structure...a pile of sticks with holes big enough for bass to roam through would be cover. Grass is cover, lily pads are cover...vegetation(so long as its not extremely thick) of any kind is cover. Brushpiles, old abandoned appliances, old car bodies, anything a fish can hide IN or AROUND and not be seen will be considered cover. Think of it like playing hide and seek or when you were little playing war..you took "cover" to avoid being seen. When a bass has the ability to "hide" in something..its cover.

any thing that is going to provide protection to the bass is called cover. For example lets say weeds below the water line or above are good cover, tree stumps or even tree branches are good cover rocks dont provide much protection but provide food so they are also called cover , and last but not least are drop offs(when water depth changes quickly) and humps provide ambush cover. hope this helps

Structure can be associated with cover as well, alot of folks kinda look at structure and cover in the same way, but there is a difference. What most bass are looking for is a place to ambush their prey, like the "cover" of a weed bed, or a blown down tree, or a rock pile or ledge. Cover is anywhere a fish can hide from other large predators or to feed on other fish.

Structure - Changes in the shape of the bottom of lakes, rivers, or impoundments, especially those that influence fish behavior. This is probably the most misunderstood word in bass fishing. Structure is a feature on the bottom of the lake. Some examples of structure are creeks, humps, depressions, sandbars, roadbeds, ledges, and drop-offs. Some examples that are not structure: a stump, tree, or brush pile (these are cover).
Cover - Natural or manmade objects on the bottom of lakes, rivers, or impoundments, especially those that influence fish behavior. Anything a fish can use to conceal itself. Examples include stick-ups, tree lines, stumps, rocks, logs, pilings, docks, weeds, boathouses, duck blinds, bushes, etc. (not to be confused with structure). |
