This line stuff is confusing...

As some of you know after some years of fishing I am looking to get serious about it. I have told me self I am going to start slow, by this I mean I am going to start with one set up and work with it in till I feel I need to add to the collection. I am going to start with a Worm/Jig set up, Falcon Original FC-5-166 Herm Special MH 12-20lb 1/4-3/4 6'6" with a BPS Extreme 6.4:1 reel. This set up will turn into a Worm rod only once I get around to a heavier jig rod, what do you think of the set up?

I have done searches on the site for line and I just get confused, although Iam thinking of putting Berkley Trilene XT 17LB Green. Maybe something heavier or Fireline?

Go with Stren Flourocarbon. 17 lb test.

You don't want flouro, kinks somethin awful. Go with 20 pound power pro braid while flippin' and wormin, and when you go straight wormin, switch to 12 pound mono, I use ANDE brand, and IMO its the best, but everybody will tell you something different. Personal Preference really.

bass fishing is like swimming..just jump in..spend all your money now.you'll be blowing it later on fishing crap anyway.
just so you know,you'll be wasting a heck of a lot of money on line until you find the line you like.we can make suggestions on what to use,but i would pay more attention to what we DON'T use.

DBake, that setup is very similar to several I use. I'm familiar with both the rod and reel and IMO you did well-it is a good balanced setup-great for worms/jigs. For line there are a lot of options-I use 50 lb Powerpro-it has the diameter of 12 lb mono-for worms and jigs and you can really fish with confidence in the thick/heavy stuff. If you are using mono or flouro I wouldn't go with less than 12 lb-it balances real well with that combo.

Do you use powerpro for other rods as well? Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, topwater...what about spinning set ups? Do you use the same #lb for each or how do you differ?

DBake, I use 3 lines: 50 lb Powerpro Braid for worms and jigs as well as pitching and flippping, 12 lb Seguar Carbon Pro Flourocarbon for weightless worms-flukes, Tiki Sticks, etc.-less stretch than mono and I'm fishing them in more open water, and 12 lb green Trilene XL for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and baits with treble hooks-there I want a little stretch. I occasionally drop to 10 lb green Trilene XL for deep running cranks to maximize depth.

I've tried a lot of different lines and keep coming back to these three.

For spinning reels I use 8 lb green Trilene XL, but have been debating trying Fireline. I've heard a lot of good things about using it on a spinning reel.

try 15lb trilene green big game.it is very good and is exellent for the price of it.
