How to put on backing.
Hey all. I looked it up already, but I was wondering...
What are all of the ways to use backing. I don't want to use a whole spool of expensive braid, but I also want maximum casting distance. Thanks all. |

There are a lot of factors that can affect casting distance, but I don't think the fact of using backing is one of them. In addition to the type of rod, reel, lure, and line, make sure the reel spool is filled properly. Conventional wisdom usually says to fill within 1/8" of the spool lip.

Thanks Marty.
Do you actually tie the braid to the backing? Or put tape on it? I've heard tape mentioned a lot. If you tie it, which knots do you use? Thanks |

You can use a simple overhand knot, tape-it really doesn't matter-when you are fishing for bass. No bass will spool you-in fact they rarely pull out more than a little line when pulling drag. The knot on the other end-to the bait-is a while lot more important.
That said, if you want to be on the safe side, a uni-to-uni knot is easy to tie and works well.

i use trilene xl 15 lb as my backing an i use the double uni knot to join the two lines, some people say tape it but i dont only fish for bass with my rods, i also fish for carp and catfish and other bigguns. and i dont wanna take the chance that they'll get me there and ill lose $15 of braid cause i was too lazy and didnt tie a knot. btw the double uni knot is really easy. hop this helps

Thanks a lot guys. Before I got any more replies, I learned the
"Improved Blood Knot" and I really love it. Would you recommend I use this? Are they okay to tie with two different lines? |

It will work fine. I think the Uni knot is easier to tie:
http://www.fish4fun.com/Joining2Lines.htm No having to hold open and thread the two ends through a tiny little space like you do with the blood knot.

This is frusturating. I just had the knot, and now it won't work for me!
Edit : I got the trick with the improved blood knot! When you stick the two lines in the hole, they need to go in the hole from opposite sides. ! Last edited by jooleyen; 03-09-07 at 11:57 PM. |

I also use the uni-to-uni knot. I gave up on blood knots years ago, as I am apparently too clumsy to easily tie them.

I have been using the uni-knot for lures/hooks and uni-to-uni for joining lines for many years---too many to tell. It is simple, can be tied easily in the dark and is as strong as any knot. Main thing as with any knot, is wet it good before cinching it down.
Also, good tip I heard recently is to use enough backing such that you will have 2 long cast of braid. |
