Default Supertuning Baitcasters!

I stumbled across this on the web today, and thought it was a great article on how to supertune a baitcaster. I am going to try what he has told me with an old baitcaster... just to see how it works.

That looks like a good read. I will dive into it more when I have more time.

Tunning reels is like tunning your vehicle, when you are finished and after dumping all that money you could have purchased a reel that already had all those features and for less money.

I agree with Raul. Also a good cleaning, grease, and little "reel magic" can go a long way. But hey, it could give some the yankees something to do this winter.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'll have to try it out some Cabin Fever season.

I'm sure glad i live in the South. The lakes never freeze (not thick anyways), but you do have slick roads during ice storms.

I posted a similar article here a few years ago.I tuned all my baitcasters by cleaning up the shafts and gears with ultra fine emery cloth. Then lube them and all the bearings(after cleaning them)with hot sauce. It makes a big difference. You can also super tune your spinning reels and they will operate much smoother.

Just went for a scooter ride through Greenwood last weekend. Went on through Andover and the long way 'round back home down through coudersport area of pennsylvania crossing back into NY from Deerfield running through Jasper troupsburg, canesteo ,hornell, arkport, Dansville, cohocton, and home.179 mile trip.Had a nice lunch in Coudersport though.

Be careful when tuning your reels.Raul is correct, Daiwa has marketed the whole precision tuning theory and I do think they are worth the extra money.

The problem with self tuning is your really not able to change the tolerences both ways as a factory technician has the parts available to do so.All you can do is polish and open the tolerences wider, which may not help your situation.

I recommend using Ardent lubrication and maintain your reels as needed. In time with use they will get better if kept clean and lubricated properly. Ivan

Default super tuning

Some of you guys have obviously super-tuned your baitcasters. How complicated is the process? How long does it typically take? As a novice can I expect to ruin a reel?

Best advise I can tell ya is if you start taking parts off a baitcaster put them in order that you took them off, and better yet have the owners schematics there to follow parts and assembly. Tuning a baitcaster involves the cleaning and lub that the guys posted about , and takes about half hour if you get in the routine of disassembling it and clean, lub and reassemble..heres a tip. dont do it after a few beers LOL

make sure the stuff goes back on the right way. I ruined a Quantum reel by putting one of the gears on wrong... It now resides in a drawer in my laundry room. If someone were inclined to pay for the shipping and would like the thing, lemme know and I'll give it to you. I don't mess with reels. There is a guy who does it here at a local tackle store for $12 a reel, so I have him do it. He's in his 60's, and he enjoys doing it, and he looks like he needs the business, so about once every 3 months, my reels go to him for a week....
