Default Break problems on my baitcaster

At the beginning of the summer I bought a Rick Clunn Baitcaster. I figured, I had good success with some of the other BPS casters so why not. Quite the mistake. Now in december the drag is failing, and the brakes make the most disgusting load clicking and clacking sound whenever I make a strong cast(the higher the break settings the loader mroe frequent it is). I tried sending it in to our local outdoors store for repair but it still is doing the exact same thing.
Any advice on what might be causing this problem?

Well the drag washers will compress when the drag is left tightened down all of the time. Some BPS drag washers seem softer than most, the Johny Morris reels I have had terrible drag washers in them.I replaced my Johnny Morris drag washers with Quantum drag washers. The Rick Clunn probably has the dual cast control system ?There is a plate that pushes against the spool braking the spool speed.there is a spring that pushes the plate back away from the spool. The clacking noise is the plate sliding back and forth. That assembly should be kept clean and properly lubricated.I personally would clean/wax /lubricate the assembly and see what it does for it.Ivan

awesome. Thanks for the advice. I'm alittle hesitant to take apart the reel myself for fear of screwing it up totally. As far as the drags, I've always loosened them up at the end of the day like suggested so maybe its just the quality of the parts used.

There are a lot of good videos and step by step diagrams online that show you how to disassemble and reassmble your reel. Heck, I bet Kevin might even have something similar.
The best thing I can tell you if you are taking it apart for the first time is to start with a clean surface and place the screws on your table/work bench in the order you take them out. I always put mine on the sticky side of a piece of duct tape. The first few times I had to alo write notes telling me what the part was.

I own 2 of the Rick Clunn reels and will purchase another one this spring. They have all worked great for me with a regular cleaning every 2-3 weeks. The Rick Clunn reel has the ITB (Inertial Transfer Braking) system, which means that there is plate on the end of the spool shaft which will roate outward when you cast, hence moving closer to the magnets. I love the system myself, as the Extreme Reels also have the same system. Try cleaning the plate of with warm water and wiping it clean, also take the reel apart and clean it and try relubing it to see what happens.

No Zooker, Daiwa does not normally use standard fiber washers as most reel companies do. New Daiwas uses a multiple carbontex washer system. The most massive Daiwa drag system I have seen was on a Luna round reel.It had a 11 washer drag system. Most upper end Daiwas have a multiple 7 washer carbontex drag system. The TDX reels uses an older reel design(super drag system)which is a multiple washer drag system with washers made of a different type of washer material, much like a teflon base or duralon based material.Daiwa uses different drag systems in their reel line up, primarily from the original reel design or updated designing of the reels design and also to cut the cost of the reel price, so its not specific as to what Daiwas standard really is. Here you go.You know you could really look this crap up for yourself.

http://www.tackletour.com/reviewDaiwat2005preview.html

This is what is printed in the article.

"..and massive seven disc wet drag system with exclusive fiber composite washers."

There you go.I suspect it was a cost cutting feature to change from the higher end washers used with the multi disc drag system. That doesn't mean its a bad thing, just may not be as smooth or disapate friction heat as well as the other drag disc used in a higher priced reel. Whatever the reason, they still aren't your standard drag washer that a Abu or Pflueger, Quantum reel uses. Ivan
