Line Twisting
I have a basic ultra-light spinning rod & reel. Both purchased at Gander Mt.
I have been experiencing line twisting... any time I give the line slack the line will twist itself up. I've tried to just let the line unravel behind the boat. Id let all the line go out with nothing on the end... no swivel... then id reel it back up with tension on it.. then after a few casts the line would go back to being all twisted. I've tried getting a new reel and tried changing the line numerous times... My father seems to think it does it because its the way I cast.... I dont know about that... Has anyone else experienced severe line twisting with their rod & reel? To better explain if you tried fishing for carp on the bottom and went to put a bolber on your line.. When you would pull the line down and put the bolber on it would spin around and twist so that it would be impossible to reel it in if you had a hit. I have no idea why this is happening... Thanks Chris |

My experience has always been that line twist on a spinning reel is usually caused by the type of lure that you're using. I used to use a spinning reel years ago but gave them up just for that reason. I only use baitcasters now. A lure such as a fluke or even worse a Slugo without weight will raise havoc with your line because they will continuously spin on retrieve. At least this has always been my experience. Not a solution but an observation. One other possibility. Are you spooling the new line on correctly?

Thanks
Im pretty sure im spooling it on right... explain if you can how too if you really think thats the problem.
One time I put on new line and used crankbaits only with a swivel so the line wouldnt twist... but the problem came back after a few outings...even with the swivel... Thanks for all the advice... I'll try it Chris |

I doubt your casting has anything to do with it. Your biggest problem IMO is the mono, but beyond that, the Ultra Lites have very small spools. Therefor they also wrap smaller, making more wraps per foor of line than a standard or large diameter spool does. Also the smaller diameter lines are easier to get line twist also. Take the spool off, set it in warm water for about 5 minutes. Put it back on the pole, and tie the end to a tree. Then pull with some tention, and then as you are reeling it in. put some Reel Magic, or KVD's stuff on a rag, and wind it through the wet rag(thanks Mac 10). Should help you out some. And keep spraying the Reel Magic occasionally on it.

I Used To Do A Lot Of Skip Casting With A Spinning Reel And When The Lure Would Hit The Water It Would Spin And Roll. Thats When I Noticed It Was The Worst.

You are doing the right thing for twist by letting it trail behind the boat. The other thing I would suggest is to close the bait by hand rather than reeling it closed. That might help.

I don't think the line is the problem-it is the reel. By nature spinning reels cause line twist. Since you are using an ultralight, do you ever reel while the drag is pulling? Easy to do with an ultralight, and that will twist the line big time.

I mean any time you hear the drag, like if you snag a stick and are reeling but no line is coming in. If you are reeling, hearing the noise the drag makes, and no line is coming in you are just twisting the line. That's one of the disadvantages when using ultralight.

yes extra spools aint just for looking at. it may be the line what kind are you using ? no reb ment add more drag. when you are reeling in a fish never reel against the drag . it will eat it up over time. what pound test is your line a heavy line on a ultra light can cause major tangles. every body else has covered the rest.

If you get a superline, then your line twist problem should go away. If you are using a swivel, then that should also help. Mono is notorious for line twsit. I prefer Fireline on my spinning reels, but you have to decide what you like. Fireline is not cheap. One other thing, are you possibly overspooling your reel?

Hard to figure out what's the problem, however, I agree with switching your mono to kinda braid line. I recommend SpiderWire STEALTH. It is cheaper than the others and has exactly same "everything". IMO, it is even better than Powerpro.
If your reel has no problem as you said, and if you don't overspooling it. It will 100% NO PROBLEM! Trust me, it is worth! Spirerwire STEALTH is very strong, smooth and sensitive! Also it is very QUIET, if you've heard the "music" from Powerpro... They have a pretty decent website too : www.spiderwire.com http://www.spiderwire.com/NonFlash/P...ductType=Braid And it is ON SALE on Cabela now, only 9.99 http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...h-results1.jsp BTW, when fishing carp, what kind baits you use? If you use doughball or corn and fishing from bank, you probably don't need any bobber. Last edited by H2O; 08-22-05 at 12:29 AM. |

I ran out to Gander and bought some Stren Superbraid 8lb test and put on about half of the 125 yards and then bought some barrel swivels... tied one of them on with a liter... well see how that works.
Im using a Guide Series Tournament Spinning Reel GST30F Ratio 5.2:1 - 8.7oz - lb/yds 6/115 Chris |

try using some ball bearing swivels too. But I better warn you they are highly expensive 6.00 for like 4.
