Jigs

I just went out and bought couple of new jigs, and have never fished them before. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any tips on this. Also they are black/blue, and black/red. I bough some greenish brown colored pork trailers, and wondering if that color would be a good color for black colerd jigs. Also, what are some good websites for jig fishing. Thanks

I fish them a lot like a plastic worm-I especially like them in flooded timber. I always match the trailer to the jig, and black/blue is a top producer. Articles:

A lot of folks mount the pork chunk with the V legs coming off the top of the chunk, but you get better action with the legs coming off the bottom of the chunk when mounted on the hook.

Some merely and carefully drag the bait slowly on the bottom....some give it an occasional hop moving the rod tip about 6 inches or so now and again.....some swim the bait near the bottom..... When you fish the lure, whenever you feel anything, set the hook immediately...... A bass makes two tonks on the line...the first is when he picks up the lure, the second is him spitting it out.

After you fish the lure for quite sometime, you build up a feel for fishing the lure.
If the bait stops along the way against a log or under a rock....don't yank, but jiggle the lure as if it's a crawdad trying to hide under the obstacle...then let it rest a bit, pausing to see if a bass will pick it up.

There nearly is as many ways to retrieve a jig as there is jig color combos. Sometimes just dragging an inch at a time is the ticket, other times it takes a large hop off the bottom. Sometimes they just hit it on the initial fall when pitching/flipping to cover. There are no hard and true methods here. One tip I'll give ya though. When your in brush and it is drapped over a limb some distance off the bottom (whether it be a foot or 6 feet) just bring the jig up to the limb so it kind of clunks into it without poping it over the limb and then let it fall back on semi-slack line. This is a killer way to induce strikes from nuetral and even negative mood fish. Sometimes just bring it up to the limp and clunk several times and let it fall...sometimes let it drop a couple of inches below the limb and shake the bejeesus out of it. But always stay intouch with the bait as much as possible. There a a zillion ways to fish a jig but the responses here covered the most common ways. Personally...i don't do well swimming a jig. I drag it in cold water. hop it in warm water. Or try to mimick how a craw swims when trying to get away from a predator.

Like Basstech said... there are numerous ways to fish a jig. Most of my fish on a jig hit it on the fall but I will usually hop it along the bottom. It depends on how aggressive the fish are as to how fast you work it. I've also caught them swimming it in grass. Black/Blue with a black trailer is probably my favorite color. A Jig-N-Pig is definately my favorite lure! Good luck!

Yes they can be fished without a trailer but they work better with some type of trailer. As far as fishing a jig you cant go wrong unless your not fishing it. Fish it slow,with hops,jumps and sometimes even rip them. Let the bass tell you how they want it fished. And NO jokes bout doc doolittle this time. Anytime your fishing a lure of any type if you catch a bass try and repeat the process again. 90% of the time 90% of the bass want a lure fished with the same action, but there are exceptions to the rule.
