Deep clear cold lakes

alright im going to try to relay the thought thats in my head about this place and hopefully someone will have some kind of tips, ideas, lure colors, techniques, anything is appreciated! i have been fishing some lakes/ponds for a couple years that are the products of "strip-mining" here close to brookwood alabama. the lakes have been there for a long time and are very clear and some very deep but hold plenty of spotted and largemouth bass, in the summer i wear them out but as soon as it get cooler and the cover dies they just quit..the lakes have alot of stringy algae/grass type of cover that basically plumes from the bottom when it is warm and getting to be summer. Now it is only covering the bottom of the lakes ranging from 1 foot to about 4 feet thick......i typically have 4 rods while fishing these waters...t-rig magII, 4" swimbait, a jig and a shaky head! stop the confusion

if you could give me an idea of water temp I could give you an idea of what / how to fish it...I would guess the temp is mid 40-50 range? Try the northeast corner and see if bass come up to feed in that warmer water due to the suns angle hitting the water. Try something fished slow,
however it wouldn't surprise me if one hit the heck out of a manns minus one in shallow water.. If you think they may be suspended out deep water try ledges or drops near deep water..you may be surprised the fish you find shallow if you get a warm/sunny day...just slow down on your presentation.

jb it'll be in the 40 plus range on the water temp. i suggest you try a pignjig. or go DEEP with a worm. in these strip mines the water is VERY deep, the bass go way down till spring and summer. or does these certain ponds not that deep? grew up fishing these as a kid. the ones i went to were pretty deep....down to around 30 feet deep.

How deep are these lakes? Do you have a boat and reliable electronics? It sounds like your situation is tailor made for jigging spoons!

John, they still work too! Another great bait this time of year are Tail Hummer type baits. Little Georges were some of the first, now they have tail hummers where your line goes all the way through the body and ties directly to the treble hook. Fish them vertically or cast them and let them go to the bottom and rip them off the bottom, take up the slack, then let fall on a controlled fall (fish normally hit on the drop).

the water is very deep. i believe the water to be in the 40-50 degree range.. also the deepest spot IMO is about 35-40ft , and as far as i can tell the only drop off would be a gradual rising sandbar on the eastern shore that isnt visible..which doesnt produce even in the summer! the lake is probably 500 yards long and around 80 yards wide at its widest. i did catch three fish there last weekend in the shallow end 2 on a tru tungsten 4" blue back herring swimbait, it was about 70 degrees outside that day

tell me more about these spoons?

been a long time since i used a spoon. but all we ever did was throw it and retrieve it at various speeds and such. or when in a boat, park (drift, or whatever) over the structure or submerged cover and jig the spoon up and down and around the said structure.
ya know, i haven't seen many spoons on the shelves come to think of it.

I found a great thing the other day. My bank will issue a visa card in place of a withdrawl with no fees. As of late, I have been able to put some poker winnings into one of those.
