Need help identifying fish
Hi Guys,
I am a newbie but have lurked here for quite some time. I hope I have done this correctly so that the pics will show properly. Please chime in and give me an opinion on what species you believe it is. Despite the fact that my hubby is holding it in the photos, I caught it today at Barren River Lake in Kentucky. Spotted bass? Any help is appreciated! |

It's probably a spot with a genetic defect or an injury it received as a fry that is somehow survived. Freakish.

Thanks for the opinion No Fear and Woody. Unless someone comes up with something better, we will just asume a spot. It was freakish.
And I will thank all of you on here that I have given tips that have helped me become a tiny bit better at bass fishing. I wil continue to lurk and learn. |

My brother believes it is a deformed largie also. Some signs point to that but other things point to a spot. The one thing everyone agreeds on is that it is one ugly fish.

Id love to see the looks of a weigh in master when he received it.
Id give 20 bucks to be there. The body is largie the mouth is short but also deformed and could also be the reason its short.Despite all that it survived, guess bottom line is every species has oddballs. An oddity here is some have a spike on tail that sticks back 2 in and a 13 in fish will measure 15,seen it twice in 5 years so it does repeat. Last edited by lilmule; 05-25-12 at 10:13 PM. |

definetly a largemouth. got a few problems, but the darker spots are common sometimes on a fish that has been staying shallow. i have heard lots of thoughts about the darker spots, but i believe they are from the sunlight penetrating through the cover they are hanging underneath. somewhat like tanning. anyway, i have caught lots of bass with the darker spots on them.

Yup. Gotta agree there, looks like an injured/mutated largemouth.

I would definitely go largemouth, just really messed up. Obviously a trooper if it can get that big with all it's problems. Thanks for the pics, and welcome aboard.

That was my first jougt, too, Aiken. That fish is kinda like the big mean dog every neighborhood seems to have......one ear half gone, messed up tail, a tooth or two missing, scars all over his head and chest, and he runs with a limp. Sure, he's ugly, but that's the one dog that no other dog wants to #&@?$! with.....

it looks like it led a rough life for sure. but hey, it's a survior.

No chance of eating it or turning it in. It was released after I quickly took the photos while hubby studied to it try to figure out what it was.

I don't believe there is any chance of nuclear waste having caused this deformity. Not much nuclear activity in south central Kentucky.

Didn't see the need in starting a new thread and since this fish is relevant to OP here he is. Caught this tenacious little rascal by accident this AM on a wacky senko. I've seen lots of parasitic type funk on fish in my life but this was really funky. I bet he catches hell from his schoolmates.
