Default 3 things to do . . .

Learn as much as you can from other fisherman and the members on this site.

Learn to use a baitcaster . . . and learn to use it well.

Go join a bassclub (marrying my wife and joining a bassclub are two of the best decisions that I ever made but I am not recommending marriage just the bassclub)

i learned more in a couple of years in a bass club than 12 years prior on my own..best part is exposure to lakes you've never fished and the club has fished it for years

I did an internet search for bass clubs in the Birmingham area and a lot of the clubs look like you need a boat. If I were to join one, I would not be able to fish as often as many of the other members and I would have to tag along with someone else's boat. Not sure if those are the kind of members they would be looking for.

#3 plan to when my kids get a little older

the only thing i could add to your list is to spend as much time on the water as possible all the knowledge in the world is great but wasted if not being put to use .

i do recomend a bass club also..although i also recomend once you get to the advance club level spending 5 years minimum as an bfl non boater..you will definatly learn how to put bass in a boat consistantly doing this...

marriage i would not recomend to my worst enemy.imo there is things worst than death marrige is one of them...

Why a bait caster I ask..

I mean I use them and have for many years but I find a spinning rod far superior if used right. But very few know how to feather, slide, flip with one.
"Challenge your self and learn to cast a big hair bug on a fly rod."

An educated thumb is very handy in combat fishing.

I would add something to your list. I know I only joined this site recently, but it wasn't till yesterday that I started reading some of the articles. I know that there are some very good fisherman in here who can answer direct questions, but I think that the articles might help a new fisherman understand what it is he needs to ask...

CaptMike,

I always used spinning gear until I learned to use a baitcaster. Simply stated, I like the baitcasters better although I still use spinning gear for certain applications. And, I believe that the baitcaster is one of the "tools of the trade" so if you are going to join a bassclub, it is worthwhile to learn how to use the different tools.

I have been married for a short 3 years and with any luck it will last as long as yours and more. And when I say luck, I really mean that I won't do anything stupid to make her want to leave. I definitely got the better of the deal in my marriage.

The first couple of times were 100% youth and a desire to not be alone. I don't count the first one too much because I deployed for 10 months six weeks after the wedding.
I decided to try some thing dumb like Love this time. Been just over 7 years now. I might not make 35, but that is only because I will die of natural causes or she will kill me.
