And OUR government wonders why the American people despise them. I've been paying social security tax since i was 16, which would be 1985 and by the time I reach retirement age, it'll probably all be gone
Thank God I'm pretty much living in my retirement

While I am pretty sure that social security is dying on the vine, the e-mail above is false.

It was based on a one time payment from the Candaian government to somalia refugees.

DO NOT believe chain emails.

There are plenty of arguments against social security without resorting to false assertions.

I know that's a commonly held opinion, but I'm virtually positive that the program will still be available for you. When things get really dire and time is getting close for the system to go broke, then the politicians will act. There are too many people who are invested in the system and who vote for Congress to let it die.

Marty,

You're right. Social Security isn't broke. As long as you count a big ol' IOU as real money. The government decided they would "borrow" all of the money from the Social Security Trust. The best example of what the government does when we're naive enough to let them watch our money for us. And still the population doesn't learn....

Marty, the problem (and reason politicians drag their feet on SS) is that it is not a very sustainable idea at its very core.

But obviously, something will have to be done with the liabilities it represents. I think they unstated idea is it will require the biggest bailout in the history of bailouts to sure up, and after that who knows what the future of the program will be for new workers.

I would be happy if we bailed it out in exchange for making participation optional.

Before they can "save" ss, they need to restructure it. As it stands, they pay tons of people to trade paperwork with each other, answer phones, and tell people, "I don't know."

I think eventually they will make the tough decisions to keep the program going. Such as:

1. Eliminating the cap on how much of one's income is subject to the tax

2. Gradually increasing the age to receive benefits

3. Reducing or eliminating benefits to those whose income is above a certain level

I'm not looking for an argument on this. That's my opinion on what I think will happen, not an endorsement or rejection of the policy.
