Default Trailers?

Just curious here, but do you throw spinnerbaits with jig trailers too? or can you use anything? or do you even NEED a trailer on a spinner bait? does this apply to buzzbaits as well?

I never use a trailer on a buzzbait (except a trailer hook), and normally never use one ona spinnerbait either. But you can put a grub or small minnow imitating plastic on your spinnerbaits if you want to. I wouldn't use a normal jigs trailer though (Chunk, crawfish, etc).

Some people like using a small plastic trailer (like a grub or split tail) on their spinnerbaits, but I can't remember the last time I've thrown a spinnerbait with a trailer on it. Maybe it's because I'm too lazy to add one, but I think mainly it's because I've done just fine without it. Plus it just gets in the way of the trailer hook, which should be used 99% of the time. My opinion, don't use them at all on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits.

Some spinnerbaits have skirts that have longer "inside" strands that sort of act like a trailer for added appeal and action. I think that is a good design and my spinnerbaits use those kind of skirts.

I put a 2/0 trailer hook on all of my spinnerbaits and add a 4" swirl tail grub

You're welcome, and Mallen is dead right about using a 2/0 trailer hook. The important thing to remember is to put the trailer hook on first, then a small piece of surgical tubing goes on next. Do not place the surgical tubing over the eye of the trailer hook. The trailer hook should dangle freely.

I have to admit, I've been doing it the wrong way apparently. I copied my favorite spinnerbait when I built my own and placed it over the eye.
And to think I was gonna look for better surgical tubing.....

All of the above. There is no right or wrong retrieve on a spinner other than what the fish want that day... Try anything and everything you can think of till you find something that works.

For the most part, I throw spinnerbaits to the shallows, edge of pads/structure and crank 'em fast enough that they break the surface a time or 2.
But I've also caught bass in 15-20' of water with a spinner and I do that by lettin it sink and giving a sharp pull up of the rod now and then, along with a slower retrieve.
Spinnerbaits are almost foolproof

You can go through grass, weeds or even pads but it requires a much slower retrieve. I'll actually throw it on top of pads so I can drop it off the pad edge

Don't forget, if you don't want the grub to get in the way of your trailer hook, put it on the trailer hook! That's how most of my Musky spinnerbait are that use grubs that are an inch in diameter for trailers, lol. (And like 10/0 hooks, )

Seriously though, once you catch some fish with 'em, you'll have a hard time putting 'em down.
I threw a spinnerbait for the first time ever a few months ago. Since that time, I've had such great luck with 'em, I'm making my own and having a hard time going away from them. They are just that good of a bait.
Keep in mind when using them, they're designed to look like a baitfish chasing a smaller baitfish. In bass language, that means buffet!

When I fish a spinner I try and bounce it off as many objects in the water as I can like wood, pads, docks, etc.

I fish alot of double gold / silver willows. But when its dark or the water is murky you cant beat a big ole colorado blade

I use Colorado blades exclusively at this point, but that could change

I prefer 2nd Cast Baits (cuz the 1st one's bad luck) for my spinnerbaits

I just started fishing with spinnerbaits about 2 months ago and have been amazed at the success I've had in such a short period of time. I normally don't use trailers, either, but have quite a few baits with the longer inside strands that extend the length of the trailer hook. I usually fish stained water, so a big gold colorado paired with a smaller silver colorado has been the best blade combination for me. Burn it, slow roll it, and yo-yo it along the bottom. Yo-Yo is what mallen described above when he lets it sink, then rips it off the bottom, and lets it sink again. I've found this is a really good technique in deeper water with willow leaf blades. That's my 2 cents, the great thing about spinnerbaits is there's no wrong way to fish them!
