Default Lucky Craft Pointer 78SP

Hey guys, picked up some LC Pointers tonight, and upon trying them out found that they slowly sink. The box says they are supposed to suspend. I was fishing them on 12 lb. mono and they were still sinking... is this normal for the 78SP?

Suspending jerkbaits like the pointer are designed for cooler water temps - or that's when they're most frequently used. And, as I'm sure you're aware of the colder water is much more dense than warm. Hence the reason they are sinking now.

But, I have used them in warm water as well. Sinking doesn't matter to me too much. I'd rather them sink slightly than float.

Like CamG said, it mostly depends on water temperature.

Although not all jerkbaits are created equal. My LC Pointer 100 sinks VERY slowly in cold water, while my LC Live Pointer 128 floats very slowly.

I'll check next time I'm out, I have some very warm water to try it in. Last time I threw one it was a 112MR and it suspended in pretty warm water. I haven't used the 78s too much though but it should be good going over weedbeds since it is a pretty shallow diver. In that size also check out the Smithwick walleye floating jerkbaits.

Yeah, i figured it was water temp.

This is my first time trying the LC Jerkbaits, and it produced fish for me the first time trying them, so I am looking forward to trying some different colors and also trying the Staysee 90's and the Bevy Shad's....

Ryan, try the 100DD out there. I have had much better luck with those than the Staycee and a guy I know that is a jerkbait master uses them a lot on Erie and Saint Clair. Now if I can only find out what color he is using...
I like the MS American Shad but there are so many to choose from.

slwo sink is better than suspending anyway.... thats what a dying fish does... it struggles to keep from sinking to the bottom... i actually put suspend strips on my suspending jerk baits to give them a slow sink...

I read a article in Bassin about jerkbaits. The pro writing the article, Ike, I think, said that whether to sink or suspend depended solely on water temp.
53 or below it should sink, 53 - 60 it should suspend, warmer than 60, it should rise.
Those aren't the exact temperatures, I don't remember exactly, but that's the general idea of what the article said.
