sharp teeth
i found a new pond that is full of bass and big bluegill. the pond is heavily vegitated with thick grass, the only lures you can fish effectively are frogs, toads, and weedless stick worms. the past few times that i have fished the pond i have gotten into some odd fish. i will feel the bite or see the strike and when i set the hook the line just cuts. i was fishing a 3x strike king finnesse worm on top and i saw the fish take it. i missed the fish but when i was inspecting the worm there were deep cuts in it. i realized then that i might be dealing with gar. but even then i would think that i could see their dorsel fins on top. they are definately not turtles because they strike like fish. i live twenty miles south of houston texas and i know it sounds weird, but today i swear that i saw a two foot striped bass jump out of the water. i thought that these striped bass were prodominitely in large reseviors in the north. if any one has any suggestions please reply, i am going to try steel wire and try to look at these slimy creatures up close in person.

I'd do just what you said. Get some nice steel leaders and try to get one.
The only thing I could think of (and I don't know if they live down there) would be snakeheads. Them are nasty little buggers. BB

Sounds like you may be getting hammered by a bowfin (Grinnel, Spot-tail, Choupique). One ugly prehistoric booger that is in just about every body of water in East and south Texas (and all across the southeast US of A).
As for the striper, well anything is possible. Someone could have dropped a couple in there. I know Lake Livingston has a big population of Striper.

When we lkived in Ohio we used to go fishing at this stocked pound and they had dog fish in there that you had to use steel leaders or loose your line. If it is snake heads watch out because they multiply like rabbits and will damage good fishing holes.

i read some info about the snakeheads and they say that if caught the fish should be killed and not released, and i should notify texas parks and wildlife as well. should i do this with the bow fin.

I don't know about the bow fins, but yes, kill the snakeheads if you catch one. once you actually see one, you'll want to kill the ugly little thing anyways.
BB P.S. Let us know how the steel leader works for ya, and pictures would be nice.

Either gar or bowfin.
You know snakeheads are supposedly delicious.

The biologists claim the snakeheads haven't made even to the Mississippi yet, but worried that they might get there soon enough.

Yea, if they make it to the mississippi, they just colonized 2/3rds of the country. Ohio river drains from appalachia, all the way to the headwaters of the Missouri river in Montana.
