Beat the monkey and can fish more!
Today started of differently than I had expected. I usually make it out to the water on Friday from sunrise until 7:30 and then meet up with some of the other IT managers and my boss for breakfast. I went to the breakfast expecting to hear the results regarding scheduled pay raises. ( I didn't think that we would get them, but still had some hope)
I didn't get the raise and in fact got told that my position was being eliminated. I have been envolved in a few lay offs over the past 12 months, but this was the first time that I was on the receiving end. For me it is not the end of the world because I am getting a pretty nice severence package. While I don't report to work anymore after today, I still receive a pay check for 60 days from the company. After those 60 days I get a check that equals 2 weeks pay for every year worked. I hit the 5 year mark this past year so that will be a lump sum (minus Uncle Sam's cut) of 2 1/2 months pay. As long as I can find something in the next couple of months then this will end up being a blessing in disguise for me.

Cass sorry to hear about your layoff. No matter what losing a job is never an easy pill to swallow, although with a severance package like yours I can understand the optimism. It is what it is and like you said its not the end of road, just alittle bump in the road. Enjoy your time off and good luck with your job search.

Sorry to hear that, and I went through it myself not too long ago. I had the blessing to have a package as well, and it really helped. Best to you in your future pursuits for work.

That sucks, but a good way to think about it. This economy is getting worse every day. I feel your pain I am closing the boutique I've owned for 11 years. Never was a big money maker but now I'm sinking quick, but my thoughts are like you at least I'll get to fish again. Pretty much taken the last four years off.

I appreciate all the feed back. I think I will come through this okay. I had already been considering another job opportunity even before this happened. If all oges as I hope I will take off the month of February and focus on the honey do list and fishing and then start the other job in March. That would give me 30 days of double dipping and then getting the severence check. If it works out as I hope, then Of course this wouldn't be the first plan of mine to go wrong, but I figure optimism is the best way to go.
For now I can spend some more time with the kids, knock out some of the honey-do-list, and get in a little bit more fishing on days when the lakes are not as crowded.

if it was with the same company then it should have voided the severence. I don't really want to go back to the same company. It is just too darn big. Going into December they had right at 300,000 employees. To easy to become just a number.
