End of the yamaha 2 stroke
I was told today by a dealer that 2010 will be the last year for 2 strokes. Stating in 2011 all outboards will be 4 stroke
Anybody else heard this?

We knew it was coming and it looks like yammy did good on the gamechanger..They may cost to much till everybody else catches up.

I think it's noteworthy that they compare it to their own 2-strokes, rather than the competition. I guess it only changes the game if you're playing with yourself to begin with (and yes, I meant that the other way too ).
A 250hp "gamechanger" weighs exactly what a 250 hp Optimax Pro XS weighs, 505 lbs (an E-TEC 250hp only weighs 13 lbs more). I want to see a multi-manufacturer shootout for the real comparison.

When they first started switching over to 4 strokes and eliminating 2s, I was distressed. If I understand this thread correctly, are we saying they are getting the 4s down closer to the hp/weight ratio we previously had?
It really matters to us small boat guys. |

WTL, I can't say what the hp/weight ratio is for the smaller motors. All I have seen is the 250 hp one. At that size, they do appear to have matched the 2-strokes.
By the way...I am probably biased a little in favor of the 4-stroke engine, even though I own a 2-stroke. I would love a quieter rig with equal power. I'm just naturally distrustful of marketing departments.

As of right now the only 2 stroke moters not being built for 2010 is the 3.3l. Actually since the 2010 moters are already built -since june 2009-it'll be 2011 before production stops on the 200-300 horse two stroke moters..
As of now the rest of the 2 strokes will still be built.. zooker

Ole zook gets the cookie on this one. You can still get the 2 strokes from authorized dealers.........unfortunately California is one place you cant...............I will tell you this though........Yamaha has introduced a new 4 stroke that is going to take the outboard market by storm.................some of you know how much I love my beloved mercurys and knowing this you should realize it hurts to say.......Yamaha has put a hurting on the outboard market. Imagine this ........a 4 stroke.....weighing LESS than a comparable 2 stroke.......with BIG cubic displacement.........and the performance of a 2 stroke...........It dont get "NO BETTER THAN THIS" When I have a little more time I will put up some links to the "SHO Yamaha"

I was told that it would only be the high HP motors. anything under 175 will still be offered in 2 stroke. I think 150-175 will be the HPDI everything up from that will be the SHO and everything else will stay the same.

70,000 is with the new skeeter FX series and that is MSRP, nobody pays MSRP for a boat and if they do they are stupid. Alot of boats are going to have an MSRP between 60-70,000. I think I heard the motor alone is about 20K which is about what you would have payed for an HPDI.

I hate to say it but the 4 stroke will make the cost associated with a big motor go through the roof. The motocross industry went to 90% 4 strokes over the last 8 years and they cost and arm and a leg to maintain. Power on a 4 stroke comes at a price of lower endurance and everyone will have to pay for it in the end.

Top end components mainly. Cams, valves, guides and such. Only saving grace is that the motorcycles turn around 8000 - 10,000rpm on average vers the boat 5000 to 5500 range. Still when you have to have work done on one there is more time involved in rebuilds or repair. Not to mention what those nice hi performance parts are going to cost for boat motors. Supply and demand type prices.
Heck anyone with a little mechanical aptitude can bore hone and 2 smoker and get it back running good. Listen, I'm a geek, I love new and better but at what price. |

Yeah, I about shat myself when I saw the 250 Verado's going for 20 grand. The reality of those prices still boggles my mind.

I'm going to look at a 95 Stratos 201 w/Johnson 200 at the end of the month if it doesn't sell before then. I know that if that motor needs it I can go through it reasonably in cost. |
