What to do
Ok on a lake I fish there is a small cove that I work up too.
Is only like 20 feet wide or so and I can only troll into and then turn around half way in before I hit bottom. My question is I have tried surface and under water lurers but can't get anything to bite out of it? I have throwen before I troll any of it and when I troll into it I see all of the clouds of dirt from the bass swimming out of it. What should I try? |

Well, based of your location, and this time of year there may not be too many bass in a cove that size. I would suspect that they are a little deeper.
Are you seeing any signs of bait fish in the cove? If so, try to throw anything that mimics them. If not and you want to cover all of the space, then I would say to C-rig a lizzard or 6 inch worm and play with the leader size. If you are bottoming out, then this might be a futile effort.

Is there any deep water nearby? If not, that area may not hold many bass. If there is deep water nearby, try finding and fishing a breakline near the cove. Also, I have to ask if your sure those fish you see kicking up clouds of dirt and swimming away are bass. I've seen that a couple times myself and discovered they were actually carp which will do the same thing. From a distance, they could easily be mistaken for bass.

There is deeper water by about 10foot deep and comes up. Also on the other side of the cove there is another cove twice the size with more brush that is 5 to 10 foot deep. I do get some out of there in the brush and stups but just cant seem to get any bites out of the small one which seems to have more in it and look like the big ones. I will have to try a worm or something. |

Nitro, have you thought about trying a wacky rigged senko? That was pretty much my go-to bait this year. Cast from a distance and see what happens.

It seems that they see you coming a ways away. Try casting from further away.

like mentioned above, if the fish are seeing you then you need to make really long cast......especially when the water is slick.

I have tried the long cast and dont get anything, get closer and the run away. Should I try sitting there for a while? I can catch them anywhere else but up there?

I would suggest you try getting into possition and just sitting there for say 10 minutes. Then make a long cast with a floating jerk bait like a Rattlin Rouge. A floating worm could work also, but only provided you could cast it far enough to maintain a safe distance. Anyways, cast that Rouge into the cove and just let it sit...and sit..and sit... then give it a couple twitches. Then sit a few minutes and twitch it again.

I've got similar situation here on the lake I fish. I'm successful when I drift in, not troll, and let the fish get accustomed to the boat. I may stand still for five minutes or so. That means no casting too!!! I watch the fish and only cast to them when they turn away. When I do cast it will be a subtle underhand pitch and it will be past the fish to very shallow water or on the bank. If the bass turns aggressively towards the bait then it's basically caught. If it runs then you don't stand a chance. Pull out and head somewhere else.
Basically you got to be a sneeky bastard........ |

Smitty's post started me to thinking, which is very dangerous.
Could you walk (yes, on land) to the cove? Ease up to a clear spot, but away from the bank maybe 20 feet so you won't spook them, and cast something subtle at them from there? |

i like the idea of casting....no tossing the bait ever so quitely onto the bank, and sooo verry s-l-o-w-l-y retrieveing it back. make the fish think it is something coming INTO the water.

I will have to try the sitting there for awhile without trolling or casting and then give a toss onto land and drop it in. Thanks for the help everyone. These are great ideas! |
