Default Buzz baits..... tips?

Ok, I gonna be honest, I've only caught one bass on a buzz bait ...... And that was a LONG time ago!

I've really been wanting to get into buzzing, but I'm gett pretty over whelmed with it as far a blades/blade colors, and matching the buzz bait to the conditions. So any one have any tips, advise, etc. on using buzzers?

Thanks guys!

I've been very successful with a 1/4 oz. white blade, white skirt or a silver blade, white skirt under most conditions, even at night. Hope this helps.

i love buzz bait fishing.

you can pay for the 5 buck booyah ones, or buy the walmart ones and get a variety of colors. you do have to modify them by putting a bead at the top of the blade by bending the wire, pulling the blade and put it up there. i like a black/yellow or a yellow/chart. and they produce well in the summer through a break in the pads or even out in the open.

its a great thrill when your out in a pond in a jonboat trying to be quiet and the waters pretty still and you get an explosion at your bait.

I've casted them with b/c's and spinning reels but i like the BC because i can control a buzz bait better for some reason..

Personally, i cast it past where i want to go and as soon as it hits the water reel it fast and keep the rod tip up. once it surfaces, you can slow it down and bring the tip down but keep the bait on the top. I've produced at different speeds but it seems that if i speed one across an area, then go back to the same spot with a slow cast and you can hear the blade sqeeking, it seems to produce for me..
Goodluck!

if you know an area is holding fish..i grid the water every 5 feet in the direction the boat goes, after covering a distance-normally a long cast worth- i move the boat 90* to my lines and square off the grid patterns every 5 feet..

this sounds hard but most good buzzbaits leave a bubble trail..

Buzz bait retrieve, the slower the better, blurp, blurp, blurp is what you should hear reeling it in. If its whizzing or a constant high pitch sound your using it to fast.

Also, as Zook and I said on the other buzzbait thread, don't get complicated w/ colors. a white a chartreuse and a black is all you need. I don't have much perference to blade color with buzzbaits.

we used to tie a new buzzbait to the boat trailer on the way to the lake and let the wind break in the blade, it squeeks more after its loosened up.
Also on the retrieve try ripping the bait across the top water every now and then, a quick short pull will give ya more bubbles and a dif sound, then resume with a normal retrieve.

Like JB said, it sounds much like a school of shad hitting the surface when getting busted from below.

I agree. In fact I only have 2 colors of buzzers, white and black. Sometimes I will fish a buzzbait without a skirt if I need to make long casts. A 2-3" piece of plastic worm or senko threaded on the hook will work fine instead of a skirt. Bare hooks work too. In my experience, the bass rarely care. It's the commotion that draws them.

I fish some w/ and some w/o. I'm sure it may depend on how aggresive the fish are.

I read recently about taking off the skirts and instead using a soft plastic on the hook. I think I will experiment with that idea. I'm thinking a 4 inch soft swimbait just might work very well.

Will the bass hit a buzzer with a clacker when they are more, and less aggressive?

btw keith, good, I would also try it with a skirt, and a swimbait!

Thanks DB! I'm watching a buzzbait vid now!

btw, anyone used a nemire spoon buzz? I have a red one!

Buzzbait tip?

Never, never, EVER throw a buzzbait without a trailer hook. EVER. For whatever reason bass often short strike a buzzbait, and no trailer hook often means no bass.

Have over my years had 95% or more hook up on buzz baits, never did use a trailor hook. Only long shank buzz baits.

Never, ever,EVER thrown one with a trailer hook. never had a problem, i know for a fact from using spinnerbaits that it WILL get hooked up on any and everything...i wont use one on a buzzbait, if you fish one right then a trailer hook will hook up every cast, i would not recommend using a trailer hook period ever on a buzzbait.

I also don't use a trailer hook. I can only count 3 times that I had a short strike on mine where a trailer hook would have made a difference.
I have to disagree with the idea of always having a slow retrieve as well. Like any bait, I think that you need to vary the retrieval from time to time. I will even do a stop and go when bringing it parallel to weeds.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess!

Way I see it, there's no right or wrong way, trailer hook, or no not!

I'll try both, you never know what the bass here will do!

I almost always use a trailer hook, unless I'm throwing around a bunch of weeds. I try to fish it as slow as I can too. sometimes I'll kill it, or fish it a bit faster, but most of the time its a slow steady retrieve.
